The sixth edition of Mexico Carbon Forum, hosted in Aguascalientes, is set to highlight the simultaneous expansion of Mexico’s Emissions Trading System, subnational carbon taxes, and voluntary markets. This regional focus underscores the regulatory and competitive necessity for Mexican corporations, industrial manufacturers, and state governments to establish unified, market-based carbon pricing frameworks. Aligning operations with international greenhouse gas accounting standards is now critical for these stakeholders to mitigate legal risks, prevent greenwashing, and capture emerging environmental investment.

The sixth edition of Mexico Carbon Forum, organized by Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV) subsidiary MÉXICO2, is officially set to take place Sept. 2–3 in Aguascalientes. The event — bringing together representatives from government, the corporate sector, and academia — will focus on advancing greenhouse gas emissions reductions in Mexico through carbon taxes, carbon markets, and carbon offset projects.

Carbon markets function as trading frameworks in which emissions credits are bought and sold, allowing companies or individuals to offset greenhouse gas emissions by purchasing credits from entities that actively reduce or remove emissions. MÉXICO2 notes that these mechanisms, which align with international climate commitments, are increasingly relevant for companies seeking to integrate sustainability into their commercial operations to drive long-term growth.

"Carbon pricing serves as an economic incentive to reduce emissions while integrating climate change considerations into organizational decision-making," says Eduardo Piquero, Director General, MÉXICO2.

According to MÉXICO2, the agenda for Mexico Carbon Forum 2026 focuses on five primary tracks:

  • Connecting regulated and voluntary markets under compatible rules
  • Strengthening trust via satellites and traceability systems to verify real emission reductions and prevent greenwashing
  • Managing carbon as an investment that generates its own funding
  • Expanding ecological solutions to include blue carbon, biochar, methane capture, and direct air capture technologies
  • Ensuring clear corporate accounting through greenhouse gas measurement under international standards

The 2026 forum arrives as the country's Emissions Trading System, federal and state carbon taxes, and voluntary markets are rapidly developing. This simultaneous progression poses the structural challenge of whether Mexico can build a coherent and competitive carbon pricing ecosystem.

Aguascalientes Hosts for the First Time

State officials stated the agreement positions Aguascalientes as a national hub for dialogue on sustainable finance, climate policy, and market-based mitigation.

"The realization of the Mexico Carbon Forum in Aguascalientes confirms the commitment of the state government to a solid, innovative, and long-term environmental agenda," said Sarahi Macías Alicea, Minister of Sustainability, Environment, and Water for the state of Aguascalientes. She noted that local initiatives like the Low Carbon Seal recognize companies committed to reducing emissions and building economic competitiveness.

The event is set to support the region's broader sustainability agenda by attracting international expertise and helping businesses adapt to evolving regulatory trends. The previous edition of the forum was held in Tampico, Tamaulipas, drawing more than 3,000 attendees and 170 speakers.
