Mexico City to Strengthen Urban Ecosystem Conservation

Mexico City’s Ministry of Environment (SEDEMA) signed a collaboration agreement with Ríos Tarango A.C. to strengthen conservation, protection, and restoration efforts in Natural Protected Areas and Environmental Value Areas classified as ravines and urban forests.

The collaboration will support the development and expansion of joint projects aimed at preserving urban ecosystems. The agreement establishes the basis and mechanisms for collaboration in ravines, urban forests, and other protected areas. The projects will focus on maintenance, conservation, protection, restoration, rehabilitation, and environmental awareness. 

SEDEMA has ongoing projects such as the Integral Ravine Recovery Plan and the Tequios por la Restauración (Tequios for Restoration) initiative, which involve reforestation, biodiversity monitoring and environmental awareness activities in protected areas. These programs also encourage participation from community groups and academic institutions.

Founded in 2010, Ríos Tarango A.C. has focused on restoring the Tarango Ravine in Álvaro Obregón, carrying out reforestation, waste collection and biodiversity monitoring, and promoting composting through its environmental center. This year, the association announced plans to expand its work to other areas, including La Magdalena Contreras and Xochimilco.

The Mexico City government, led by Mayor Clara Brugada, said the agreement reaffirms its commitment to collaborate with organizations to safeguard the city’s natural heritage and ensure its preservation for present and future generations.
