Mexico’s sales of electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid vehicles increased 44% year over year during the 1H26, reaching 95,037 units, while domestic production of electrified vehicles for export fell 57%. The divergence highlights growing domestic demand, driven largely by Asian brands, alongside weaker US demand that is prompting automakers including General Motors, Ford and Toyota to adjust electric vehicle production in Mexico.

According to the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA), sales of hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric vehicles increased from 65,991 units in 1H25 to 95,037 units in the same period of 2026. These technologies represented 12.6% of total vehicle sales, compared with 9.2% a year earlier.

During the first five months of 2026, AMIA recorded 77,702 electrified vehicles sold, up 42.1% year over year. Conventional hybrids accounted for 54,073 units, or 69.6% of sales, followed by plug-in hybrids with 12,063 units and fully electric vehicles with 11,566 units. In May alone, sales reached 17,300 units, 55.1% above the same month in 2025.

The Mexican market is increasingly supported by Asian manufacturers. Toyota has maintained a strong presence in conventional hybrids, while Chinese brands including MG, Geely, Changan, Jetour, Soueast, Link & Co, BYD, Chirey, and GAC have expanded their electrified vehicle offerings.

The Electro Mobility Association (EMA) reported 170 electrified models available in Mexico, including 110 fully electric vehicles and 60 plug-in hybrid and extended-range electric vehicles. “Even in a complex geopolitical environment, the Mexican market is showing resilience and consumers continue choosing new-technology vehicles as a relevant option when renewing their vehicle,” says Eugenio Grandio, President, EMA.

Electric Vehicle Production Declines but Charging Infrastructure Expands

Mexico’s production of electric vehicles has moved in the opposite direction. The country produced 47,411 electric vehicles during the 1H26, compared with 110,002 units produced by General Motors, Ford and Toyota during the same period of 2025, according to INEGI data.

General Motors’ Equinox EV production fell 81.6%, from 38,995 units to 7,185 units, while Blazer EV production declined 80%, from 10,469 units to 2,099 units.

Mexico began producing electric vehicles for the US market with Ford in 2020, followed by General Motors, Toyota and Stellantis. Production expanded while US purchase incentives supported demand, but weaker market conditions have since led manufacturers to reduce output.

The increase in vehicle sales is also being accompanied by charging infrastructure growth. EMA reported 60,934 public and private charging positions at the end of the 1H26, up 55% from 39,257 a year earlier. Private charging positions reached 56,279, up 56% from 36,045 in June 2025. EMA members had 263,928 electrified vehicles in circulation in Mexico by mid-2026.

“The next step is to create the conditions that allow the country to lead the growth of these technologies, strengthen domestic manufacturing, and prepare the sector for changes that are already transforming the global automotive industry,” Grandio says.
