Mexico Ranks 75th Globally in Sustainable Development: OECD
Mexico ranked 75th among 169 economies in the Sustainable Development Report 2026, recording a score of 70.5 out of 100 and trailing the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) average of 78.2 points. Although the country increased its Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) performance score by 4.5 points since 2015, the rate of improvement remains insufficient to close the gap with international peers or leading Latin American economies. The report indicates that while Mexico maintains a solid foundation in basic public services, education, and financial inclusion, persistent structural deficits in environmental management, energy transition, and wastewater treatment constrain overall progress.
Mexico Carbon Forum Highlights Carbon Market Growth
During the sixth edition of the México Carbon Forum in Aguascalientes, Eduardo Piquero, Director General, MÉXICO2, highlighted that Mexico’s carbon market reached a record 3.5 million carbon credits issued in 2025, but increasing domestic demand will be key to providing the market with greater liquidity and depth. Sessions addressed climate-related reporting before Mexico’s National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV), project financing, banking products and access to renewable energy. Participants also reviewed the Science Based Targets initiative’s (SBTi) Corporate Standard 2.0, updates to Mexico’s Emissions Trading System, state-level carbon taxes and developments in the global voluntary carbon market. The agenda also covered the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

Mexico has presented its 2026-2030 Sustainable Tourism Policy, a national framework aimed at integrating sustainability criteria into tourism planning and decision-making across the country’s 32 states, while strengthening environmental management, climate resilience, intergovernmental coordination, and access to financing for sustainable projects. The framework is structured around five strategic pillars covering sustainable tourism governance, tourism culture, sustainable, and regenerative tourism offerings, climate resilience and risk management, and financing. Together, these areas include 16 lines of action and 60 key actions, with designated responsibilities and implementation timelines for the short, medium, and long term.
Profepa, ECOCE Strengthen Plastic Recycling Efforts
Mexico’s Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) and Ecología y Compromiso Empresarial (ECOCE) signed a collaboration agreement to strengthen the circular management of plastic materials, environmental education, and responsible waste management, with the aim of preventing plastic waste from being abandoned in the environment and promoting its recovery and reuse. The agreement establishes a framework for joint training programs, awareness campaigns, technical assistance, and the collection, recovery and recycling of post-consumer containers and packaging. The initiatives will involve government authorities, companies, organizations and citizens.
