Nissan Expands Sustainability Efforts Across Mexico

Nissan Mexicana is strengthening its sustainability strategy through reforestation and lower-carbon manufacturing. More than 90% of electricity used in Nissan's manufacturing now comes from CO₂-free sources, preventing over 971,000 tonnes of emissions. Additional initiatives include solar energy, water reuse, waste reduction, and efficient production technologies.

Nissan Mexicana is expanding its sustainability strategy through reforestation initiatives and lower-carbon manufacturing, reinforcing its commitment to decarbonization and environmental stewardship. The automaker recently planted 1,600 trees in the State of Mexico and Aguascalientes with the support of 320 volunteers, while more than 90% of the energy used in its manufacturing operations now comes from CO₂-free generation sources.

The reforestation campaign forms part of Nissan's global sustainability strategy and is designed to restore forest ecosystems, capture carbon and recover environmental services that benefit local communities. The initiative has an estimated carbon capture potential of 1,100t of CO₂ over the lifetime of the trees and includes a monitoring program targeting an 80% survival rate.

The first reforestation event of 2026 took place on July 4 in the State of Mexico, where 100 volunteers planted 1,050 trees alongside Reforestamos México, a nonprofit dedicated to forest conservation, restoration, and sustainable forest management.

A second event followed on July 18 in Aguascalientes, where 220 volunteers planted 600 trees in coordination with the Government of Aguascalientes through the Secretariat of Sustainability, Environment and Water (SSMAA). The initiative brought together employees and their families under Nissan's One Nissan program to promote environmental participation and sustainability.

Beyond planting trees, the initiative aims to restore ecosystems affected by deforestation, wildfires, pests, disease, and land-use change. Healthy forests contribute to carbon sequestration, improve rainwater infiltration, reduce soil erosion, enhance air quality, and support the return of native plant and animal species.

"What we are doing is not simply planting trees; we are helping build forests for future generations. Every tree represents an investment in biodiversity, water and environmental resilience. When communities, specialists, governments and companies work together, the positive impact multiplies and creates a legacy that extends beyond the present," Centeno says.

Since 2022, Nissan has maintained annual reforestation programs across multiple regions of Mexico as part of its broader sustainability and corporate social responsibility strategy.

Manufacturing With Lower Carbon Emissions

Nissan's environmental strategy extends beyond ecosystem restoration into its manufacturing operations. The company has produced more than 16 million vehicles in Mexico, while continuing to reduce emissions across its production facilities.

More than 90% of the electricity used in Nissan Mexicana's manufacturing operations now comes from CO₂-free generation sources. The company has assembled 3.79 million vehicles using CO₂-free electricity, including 2.3 million produced with renewable energy, preventing more than 971,000t of CO₂ emissions.

"Our A1 and A2 plants in Aguascalientes reflect Nissan's vision for more efficient and sustainable manufacturing by integrating innovation, responsible water management, emissions reduction and smart technologies as part of our global Nissan Green Program," says Joan Busquets, Vice President of Manufacturing, Nissan Mexicana.

As part of that strategy, Nissan installed a solar panel system at the Vehicle Processing Center (VPC) in its A2 complex. The installation prevents approximately 86t of CO₂ emissions annually, equivalent to the carbon absorbed by about 3,400 mature trees or the conservation of 19 ha of forest.

The Nissan Green Program also includes water conservation, waste management, air quality improvements and biodiversity protection. Rainwater harvesting systems at the A1 and A2 plants have enabled the reuse of up to 475,000 m3 of water. In addition, the A2 facility operates as a zero-discharge plant, recycling treated water for irrigation and internal services.

These initiatives have positioned Nissan among the industry's most water-efficient manufacturers, with water consumption of 1.23 m3 per vehicle at A2 and 2 m3 per vehicle at A1, including its engine plant. To further reduce emissions, Nissan uses high-efficiency automated painting systems, Best Available Control Technology (BACT) and water-based paint processes throughout its manufacturing operations. The company also operates nurseries that produce approximately 4,000 trees annually. More than 7,800 trees have already been planted in the ecological reserve at the Aguascalientes A2 complex.

In recognition of these efforts, Nissan's Aguascalientes operations received the Green Footprint award from the Municipality of Aguascalientes in January 2026. Earlier, in November 2025, the A1 and A2 plants earned the state's Low Carbon certification for reducing direct and indirect manufacturing emissions.
