Nissan Mexicana has reinforced its flagship sustainability initiative, the Nissan Green Program, by consolidating its manufacturing operations in Aguascalientes and advancing projects focused on clean energy, environmental responsibility, and community engagement.

According to Marco Ribera, Nissan Mexicana’s Manager of Environmental and Energy Strategy, the company has made significant progress in reducing its carbon footprint. “At our Aguascalientes plant, more than 95% of electricity comes from CO₂-free sources,” he said. “This has enabled us to assemble over 3 million vehicles using clean energy, avoiding the emission of more than 782 tons of CO₂.”

At the Aguascalientes facility, the automaker has also installed solar panels to complement LED lighting systems, cutting emissions by 100,000 kilograms of CO₂ annually — the equivalent of planting 1,600 trees. These measures are supported by energy-efficient design and operational practices, such as maximizing natural lighting and optimizing production methods.

Ribera added that Nissan’s sustainability framework also integrates employee-led social programs. Among them is “Apachurrón, reciclar para ayudar,” an initiative launched in 2016 that encourages employees and their families to collect PET plastic. Proceeds from recycling are donated to the Mexican Association for Helping Children with Cancer (AMANC), helping fund treatment for more than 50 low-income patients in Aguascalientes.

“At Nissan Mexicana, we believe sustainability and innovation are not separate paths but complementary forces that drive progress,” Ribera said. “Our approach aims to transform the automotive industry while generating long-term benefits for society.”
