OXXO, BioBox Install Smart Recycling Machines at UANL

OXXO and BioBox have installed two smart recycling machines at stores located at Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo Leon (UANL) to promote environmental awareness and encourage responsible waste management among the university community.

BioBox, a 100% Mexican startup, integrates proprietary hardware and software to create an efficient recycling process supported by a digital platform. Through its Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) and mobile app, users can deposit recyclable solid waste and receive rewards, creating an incentive-based model that supports sustainability practices.

The RVMs installed at UANL allow students, faculty, and visitors to recycle a wide variety of materials, including clear and colored PET, glass, aluminum, flexible and rigid plastics, coffee capsules and bottle caps. Users can also accumulate points through the BioBox app, which can be exchanged for Spin Premia points when linked to their account, enabling purchases at more than 23,000 OXXO stores nationwide.

“Young generations, like those at UANL, are essential for achieving lasting change. They have the opportunity and responsibility to lead the transition toward a more conscious and committed society,” said Ángela Barragán, Environmental Manager, OXXO.

Luis Alvarado, CEO, BioBox, highlighted the importance of the initiative’s expansion. “Reaching Nuevo Leon for the first time is a key step in our mission to make recycling an everyday and accessible practice. With the right technology and a reward model close to people, we aim to transform how waste is managed in Mexico,”  he said. 

The collaboration is part of OXXO’s broader sustainability strategy and supports its goal of achieving Zero Waste to Landfill by 2030. These two machines are part of a program to install 150 smart recycling machines across selected stores in Mexico City, State of Mexico, Nuevo Leon and Jalisco, strengthening partnerships between companies, educational institutions and local communities to promote sustainable practices.
