Paris Olympics' Green Claims Put in Question Over Plastic Bottles
The Paris 2024 Olympics, heralded as the most eco-friendly games in history, is facing criticism from environmental groups over its handling of plastic waste. Despite promises to cut single-use plastic by half compared to the London 2012 Games, their implementation has sparked controversy.
French environmentalists have expressed concerns about what they describe as "greenwashing" at various Olympic venues. Specifically, they have criticized the practice of filling reusable "eco-cups" from plastic bottles, which results in a significant amount of plastic waste. This method, they argue, creates a double use of plastic—first as a bottle and then as a cup—contrary to the Games' sustainability goals.
Coca-Cola, the main sponsor and sole supplier of beverages including Coke, Fanta, and Sprite, is at the center of the issue. The company has committed to reducing single-use plastic, with more than half of its 18 million drinks served in Paris being dispensed through soda fountains or glass bottles. However, Coca-Cola admitted that approximately 6.2 million drinks would still be served from recycled plastic bottles due to technical and logistical constraints preventing the installation of soda fountains at all venues. The biodiversity association Noé argues that the use of plastic bottles to fill reusable cups undermines the Games' environmental objectives. They describe the situation as a missed opportunity to showcase effective sustainability practices and have labeled the practice as “greenwashing.”
The NGO Zero Waste France echoed these concerns, stating that the practice does not align with the vision of zero plastic and has sparked widespread discontent among both NGOs and the public. The criticism has also extended to the French government's decision to grant an exemption from the anti-waste law banning single-use plastic bottles in public venues, citing public health concerns related to potential doping.
Despite the pushback, Coca-Cola maintains that it is committed to recycling and has implemented measures to ensure that empty plastic bottles are collected and processed. However, the criticism highlights ongoing challenges in balancing large-scale event management with environmental sustainability goals.
