Plastic Recovery in Mexico Hits 34%: The Week in Sustainability

Mexico Firms Surpass 2025 Plastic Recovery, Recycling Goals

Mexican corporations representing more than half of the country’s plastic packaging market have exceeded several 2025 recycling and recovery goals, according to the Fifth Annual Report of the National Agreement for the New Plastic Economy. The report covers 77 companies accounting for 51% of the plastics packaging market. Collectively, they recovered 34% of plastic packaging in 2024, surpassing the 30% target set for 2025. In addition, 24% of new packaging was manufactured with post-consumer recycled content, exceeding the 20% goal.

Sinaloa to Host US$3.3 Billion Green Methanol Plant

Sinaloa is set to become a hub for green energy production with the construction of Mexinol Pacifico, the world’s largest green methanol plant in Topolobampo, Ahome. The US$3.3 billion project will position the state as a leader in sustainable fuel development, Governor Rubén Rocha Moya said. The plant will produce 350,000 mt of green methanol and 1.8 million mt of blue methanol annually, equivalent to 6,130 mt per day. Methanol is emerging as a cleaner fuel option for shipping, transport, and industrial applications.

PINSA: First Company in Mexico to Neutralize Water Footprint

Food processor PINSA signed a collaboration agreement with the National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR) and the community of La Noria to protect 1,375ha of tropical forest for five years, becoming the first company in Mexico to neutralize its water footprint through watershed conservation.

Mexico City Hosts 32nd Green Expo on Renewable Energy

The 32nd edition of The Green Expo took place Sept. 2-4 in Mexico City. The expo, held alongside Intersolar Mexico and Aquatech Mexico, reflected an integrated approach to Mexico’s sustainability challenges. Three forums were hosted, bringing together experts, entrepreneurs, and officials to discuss climate change challenges and opportunities. Panels at the main forum addressed green finance, the clean energy transition, and electric mobility, while the second forum focused on wind energy, and the third—new to Green Expo—explored hydrogen technologies.

Mexico Unveils Marine, Coastal Environment Assessment

The Mexican government presented the Marine and Coastal Environment Assessment for the South-Central Pacific Region, a technical document that will guide the country’s first national Policy on Seas and Coasts focused on ocean and biodiversity protection. The strategies derived from the assessment will integrate existing government initiatives, such as the National Environmental Restoration Program and the National Strategy for Beach and Coastal Cleanup in Mexico.
