Profepa, ECOCE Strengthen Plastic Recycling Efforts
Mexico’s Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) and Ecología y Compromiso Empresarial (ECOCE) signed a collaboration agreement to strengthen the circular management of plastic materials, environmental education, and responsible waste management, with the aim of preventing plastic waste from being abandoned in the environment and promoting its recovery and reuse. The agreement establishes a framework for joint training programs, awareness campaigns, technical assistance, and the collection, recovery and recycling of post-consumer containers and packaging. The initiatives will involve government authorities, companies, organizations and citizens.
“At PROFEPA, we are promoting a broad approach to prevention that, among other issues, includes the circular management of materials. This agreement with ECOCE, a pioneer in recycling, helps strengthen a culture of circularity and environmental responsibility. Our goal is to contribute to the transition toward a circular economy, in order to revalue waste, reduce its impacts, generate added value from materials and encourage more responsible consumption,” says Mariana Boy, Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection.
The agreement builds on previous collaboration between the organizations. ECOCE participated in PROFEPA’s national Gol por el Ambiente (Goal for the Environment) campaign, monitoring 95 institutions and managing nearly 24,000kg of recyclable plastics. The materials were collected, consolidated, and directed to specialized centers and recycling plants, with traceability maintained throughout the process.
Jorge Terrazas, Director, ECOCE, says the agreement will help expand cooperation among stakeholders and strengthen environmental education around waste management. “Current environmental challenges require solutions built through collaboration. This agreement represents an opportunity to combine capabilities, strengthen environmental education and bring more people closer to the circular economy through concrete actions that give materials a second life and prevent them from becoming waste abandoned in the environment,” Terrazas adds.
Under the agreement, PROFEPA and ECOCE will organize training sessions, seminars, workshops, and outreach activities for companies, organizations, educational institutions, and the public. These initiatives will focus on proper waste separation, circular management of materials and compliance with environmental regulations.
The collaboration will also seek to generate information on the volumes of materials recovered, document their traceability, and share results to identify the environmental benefits associated with recycling and responsible waste recovery. For PROFEPA, the agreement is part of a broader prevention strategy aimed at promoting responsible waste management practices and strengthening mechanisms for self-regulation and environmental responsibility. The agency will monitor activities carried out under the agreement and support initiatives designed to prevent environmental damage.
The partnership is intended to increase the participation of different sectors in pollution prevention while supporting the reduction of waste generation and the reintegration of recovered materials into production processes.
