The Ministry of Rural and Agro-Business Development (SEDRAE) and the Intercultural University for Equality (Uniti) have signed the UN-backed “Earth Charter”, formalizing their commitment to sustainable agricultural development and environmental protection.

According to SEDRAE Secretary Isidoro Armendáriz, the charter underscores the importance of integrating sustainability principles into Mexico’s agricultural sector. “There can be no agriculture without nature,” he said, noting that the agency is expanding international cooperation on water and soil management while advancing agroecological projects. These include initiatives linked to Irrigation District 001, the adoption of water-efficient technologies, and support programs promoting organic fertilizers.

Armendáriz added that climate change is disrupting rainfall patterns and directly affecting farmers, prompting the agency to implement measures that enhance resilience and adaptation. He emphasized that long-term productivity depends on protecting natural resources and aligning public policy with sustainable practices.

Uniti Rector Winna Rosas Escutia said the charter fosters shared responsibility and supports progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She encouraged the academic community and partner institutions to engage actively in sustainability efforts and adopt practices aligned with the charter’s principles.

Representing Earth Charter International, Gina Ventura highlighted the agreement’s symbolic and institutional significance, calling it a clear demonstration of commitment to environmental action and community-based sustainability. She described the signing as a key step in strengthening collaboration among the public sector, academia, and civil society.

The Earth Charter, backed by the United Nations, is a global declaration that encourages governments, organizations, and communities to protect nature, uphold human rights, and promote peace and shared responsibility. It provides a framework for aligning public policy and education programs with sustainability objectives. SEDRAE and Uniti said the agreement will guide future initiatives and help embed sustainability principles into agricultural and educational planning.
