Siemens’ Mitras facility in Nuevo Leon has become the first industrial building in Mexico to achieve LEED Platinum certification under v4 standards, signaling a shift toward high-efficiency manufacturing in the North American supply chain. By integrating blockchain-based carbon tracking and on-site solar generation, the plant aligns Mexico’s industrial sector with global ESG mandates and “Hecho en México” quality standards. The milestone sets a regional benchmark for combining digitalization with sustainable infrastructure to enhance returns and industrial competitiveness.

Siemens announced that its Mitras manufacturing facility in Santa Catarina, Nuevo Leon, has been awarded LEED Platinum certification, the highest level within the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. The 18,700 m² complex is the first Siemens factory worldwide to achieve this distinction and the first industrial building in Mexico to reach Platinum status under the LEED v4 Building Design and Construction: New Construction category.

The facility, which opened in 2024, serves as a central component of the company’s strategy to expand production capacity in northern Mexico. The plant specializes in plastic injection molding and the assembly of low-voltage electrical components. These products are essential for circuit protection and electrification technologies, supporting the development of more resilient and efficient energy infrastructure.

Alejandro Preinfalk, President and CEO, Siemens Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, stated that the milestone demonstrates the compatibility of industrial competitiveness and environmental responsibility. According to Preinfalk, the facility functions as a model for next-generation industrial installations by integrating digitalization with sustainable infrastructure.

The Mitras project’s emissions reductions were supported by “SiGreen,” a platform that leverages blockchain technology to track the carbon footprint of products throughout the industrial process. This tool allows the plant to provide real-time data on the sustainability of each production line, facilitating more informed decision-making and enhancing traceability across the value chain, while ensuring that every component manufactured in Santa Catarina meets the stringent transparency requirements of modern global supply chains.

The certification highlights a broader shift in industrial strategy toward integrated sustainability. Eryn Devola, vice president of sustainability, Siemens Digital Industries, noted that companies are moving beyond high-level climate pledges toward structural changes in how they operate. “Organizations are redesigning production, logistics and energy systems simultaneously,” Devola said. “Digital tools make it possible to evaluate trade-offs, optimize performance and align sustainability goals with economic returns before capital is deployed.”

To achieve the Platinum rating, the Mitras plant implemented a suite of advanced automation and digital monitoring platforms, providing operational transparency and enabling real-time energy management. Technical data provided by the company indicates that the site generates approximately 800 MWh of renewable energy annually through an on-site solar array. These efficiency measures and renewable energy sources result in a reduction of approximately 2,740 tons of CO₂ emissions per year, equivalent to a 40% decrease in energy consumption compared to standard industrial reference buildings.

Judith Wiese, Chief People and Sustainability Officer and Member of the Managing Board, Siemens AG, emphasized the role of the Mexican workforce in this achievement. “The LEED Platinum certification for our Mitras manufacturing plant is a blueprint for the future of sustainable manufacturing,” Wiese said. “Mexico is fundamental to making this future a reality: a strategic hub with highly skilled talent that allows Siemens to deliver innovation at scale.”

Siemens Real Estate (SRE) managed the development and execution of the Mitras project. SRE has a track record of utilizing the LEED system, having delivered more than 70 certified projects totaling 1.2 million m² globally.

The Mitras facility produces components primarily for the North American market, positioning Mexico as a critical node in Siemens’ global supply chain. In November 2025, the company received the “Hecho en México” (Made in Mexico) certification from the Ministry of Economy (SE), recognizing the national technological value and quality of products manufactured in the country.

The LEED Platinum designation is currently the most widely used green building rating system globally, active in over 180 countries. By securing the highest possible tier under the more rigorous LEED v4 standards, Siemens aims to influence industrial benchmarks across the region. Marco Cosío, Vice President of Smart Infrastructure for the region, noted that the integration of digital tools at Mitras allows the company to optimize industrial performance while meeting stringent ESG targets.
