Tetra Pak, SIMEPRODE Partner on Recycling in Nuevo Leon
Tetra Pak and the Integral System for the Ecological Management and Processing of Resources (SIMEPRODE) formalized a strategic agreement to strengthen the recovery and recycling of food and beverage carton packaging in Nuevo Leon, aiming to integrate these materials back into industrial value chains under a circular economy model.
The agreement focuses on optimizing the collection, separation and processing of Tetra Pak cartons to prevent landfill disposal and enable their reuse as secondary raw materials. The collaboration aligns with Tetra Pak’s global sustainability strategy to develop more efficient and scalable systems for collection, recycling and material valorization.
The initiative includes coordinated actions to improve waste separation at the source and expand recovery through SIMEPRODE’s sorting plant and collection points under the Rutas Verdes (Green Routes) program. It also provides for infrastructure upgrades, technical training, knowledge-sharing and environmental education campaigns to increase public participation in recycling.
A central component of the partnership is the consolidation of recycling value chains through collaboration with specialized companies, expanding the transformation of used cartons into products such as paper, cardboard tubes, roofing sheets, permeable flooring, alternative wood, urban furniture and industrial inputs.
Both parties will also assess the adoption of new technologies to enhance collection, sorting and recycling processes, drawing on international models. Monitoring and evaluation mechanisms will be implemented to track progress, identify improvements and scale solutions.
“For Tetra Pak, the circular economy is not an aspirational concept, but an operational priority that requires solutions at scale and collaboration among key stakeholders. This alliance with SIMEPRODE reflects our commitment to promoting more robust recycling systems, where each recovered package is reintegrated into new value chains, generating measurable environmental and economic impact,” said Guillermo Pugliese, Director of Sustainability for Tetra Pak Mexico, Andean and Central America & Caribbean.
Francisco Silva, Director General, SIMEPRODE, said the agreement advances a more efficient and inclusive circular economy model. “Collaboration between government and the private sector is key to strengthening our capabilities in comprehensive waste management, particularly in recycling and recovery, to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. With this agreement, we continue to add partners and move toward a more efficient, sustainable and inclusive model for the benefit of society and a circular economy model for the state of Nuevo Leon,” he said.
Under the agreement, Tetra Pak will ensure that recovered packaging is reintroduced into production cycles, maximizing material value and supporting the transition toward more sustainable production and consumption models in Nuevo Leon
