Toyota Mexico Wins SDG Award at Exceptional Company Awards
Toyota Motor de México received recognized in the “Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals” category at the fifth edition of the Reconocimiento Empresas Excepcionales (Exceptional Company Awards), an initiative backed by the Mexican Business Coordinating Council, the Institute for Quality Promotion and the Council of Communication. This year’s event honored 50 companies for 88 practices linked to social impact and sustainable development. Toyota stood out for initiatives focused on community well-being, supply-chain strengthening, transparency, social innovation and diversity and inclusion.
The award highlights the consolidation of Toyota’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy under Fundación Toyota México, created in 2022 to align and scale efforts across the company’s manufacturing plants, corporate offices, sales operations and national dealer network. The foundation’s work follows the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Toyota’s Environmental Challenge 2050, applying a “Think Global, Act Local” approach across three pillars: environment, road safety and education. Its model is based on long-term partnerships, emergency response capabilities and an evaluation system with defined metrics.
“Fundación Toyota México has allowed us to unify our ESG vision and translate global commitments into local action,” the company said, noting that its strategy aims to integrate sustainability into core business functions while supporting surrounding communities.
Since its creation, the foundation has implemented more than 97 projects, reached 161,408 beneficiaries and allocated MX$66.9 million (US$3.68 million) to social and environmental initiatives. Toyota reports that its programs support multiple SDGs. Under SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), medical initiatives in Guanajuato and Baja California have benefited more than 15,000 people. Under SDG 4 (Quality Education), the company has offered donations, volunteer programs and in-kind support for schools near its operations. Under SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), Toyota has provided assistance to emergency response agencies — including Protección Civil, local fire departments and the Red Cross — and organized holiday campaigns for children in low-income households. Under SDG 15 (Life on Land), Toyota supports conservation programs for felines in the Selva Lacandona and Sierra Gorda through partnerships with Natura y Ecosistemas Mexicanos, and COPANABIS.
Among the company’s environmental projects is a long-term conservation program supporting five wild feline species in the Selva Lacandona, which includes education and local governance components. In the Sierra Gorda, monitoring efforts recently confirmed the presence of a female jaguar named “Tacoma,” a finding Toyota says will help strengthen protection strategies for the species.
Toyota has also participated in emergency housing efforts, including building temporary homes for families in Guerrero affected by Hurricanes Otis and John, in partnership with TECHO. Its Toyota Conduciendo un México Mejor program, now in its sixth edition, has prioritized aid for communities impacted by Otis. In mobility-related support, the company’s 10-year partnership with Fundación Teletón has resulted in the donation of more than 100 vehicles to CRIT rehabilitation centers across the country, improving mobility for more than 1,600 children.
