UG Launches 3rd PSE Workshop to Boost Sustainable Production

The University of Guanajuato (UG) has launched the 3rd Process Systems Engineering (PSE) in Mexico Summer Workshop, bringing together more than 100 academics, students, and industry professionals to advance cleaner and more sustainable production systems. Experts view PSE as essential for sustainable development, as it focuses on designing processes that transform raw materials into end products while optimizing resources and industrial operations.

The five-day workshop features technical courses, research presentations, and a mini-symposium titled “The Future of PSE in Mexico.” Running through Aug. 8, the event emphasizes practical tools such as process modeling, data science, chemical process optimization, process control, and machine learning.

Opening the event on August 4, Dr. Martín Picón Núñez, Rector of UG’s Guanajuato campus, described the workshop as an opportunity to renew interest in a discipline that shapes industrial processes to meet sustainability goals. He highlighted its potential to address climate change, water scarcity, food security, biodiversity loss, and sustainable resource management.

Dr. Juan Gabriel Segovia Hernández, from UG's Chemical Engineering Department, noted the program’s breadth and its role in fostering interdisciplinary dialogue essential to advancing sustainability and technological self-reliance. He praised the event’s balance of technical rigor and social relevance.

UG is hosting the workshop for the second time, in collaboration with a network of academic and industry partners including the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, University of Wisconsin–Madison, University of Waterloo, Imperial College London, Max Planck Institute, Sandia National Laboratories, Eli Lilly, and AspenTech.
