Yucatan Seeks German Investment in Energy, Tech
Yucatan Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena met with German Ambassador to Mexico Clemens von Goetze in Merida to expand bilateral dialogue focused on investment, technology exchange and institutional cooperation in sectors including energy, water and innovation, according to official state releases. The meeting took place at the Government Palace and included representatives from the German Embassy, state officials and leaders from the energy and economic sectors.
During the session, Díaz Mena presented Yucatan’s economic and industrial outlook and outlined priority initiatives under the state’s “Renacimiento Maya” development plan. The agenda emphasizes projects linked to renewable energy deployment, responsible water management and the incorporation of sanitation technologies designed to support sustainable growth.
“Yucatán is experiencing a period of transformation, with social stability, security and a strategic location that makes it attractive for investment,” Díaz Mena said. He added that Germany represents a global benchmark in industry, innovation and sustainable development, and noted that existing commercial ties include exports such as honey.
The governor also detailed infrastructure projects intended to strengthen Yucatan’s logistics and industrial platform. These include the modernization of the Port of Progreso, development of a freight rail system and the creation of “Polos del Bienestar,” or development hubs aimed at attracting productive investment and supporting industrial expansion under sustainability criteria.
Von Goetze described the visit as his second to the state and said the presentation of Yucatan’s economic and industrial landscape highlighted opportunities for coordinated work between German and Yucatecan institutions and companies. “The bilateral relationship offers significant potential for growth, particularly in renewable energy, where Yucatan has favorable conditions,” the ambassador said. The meeting also followed Germany’s participation in Yucatan Peninsula’s first Regional Forum on Sanitation for Water Sustainability in December 2025.
German companies have expressed interest in renewable and clean energy projects in the region, citing climatic factors such as high solar radiation and elevated temperatures that support low-emission power generation.
