Airbnb Activity Supports Over 300,000 Jobs in Mexico
Airbnb says that activity generated by its hosts and guests in 2024 contributed to supporting over 300,000 jobs across Mexico. The platform estimates that this activity generated over MX$145 billion (US$7.7 billion) in economic impact nationwide and more than MX$37 billion (US$1.96 billion) in labor income across multiple sectors.
The analysis found that for every peso spent on an Airbnb stay in Mexico, guests spent about four additional pesos in the local economy. This secondary spending, which included food, transportation, entertainment, and retail, benefitted a wide range of businesses, from restaurants and local shops to cultural venues and transportation providers.
Food and beverage services accounted for 33% of the additional spending, followed by arts, entertainment, and recreation, ground transportation, and retail and repair services. Nearly 45% of guest spending occurred in the neighborhoods where Airbnb accommodations were located, channeling economic benefits directly into communities that often fall outside traditional tourist areas, says the company.
Airbnb highlights that its platform allows tourism-related revenue to extend beyond established tourist zones, creating opportunities for small businesses and service providers in a variety of locations. This includes entrepreneurial hosts, secondary suppliers, and workers in related industries who benefit from the broader tourism value chain.
