CITI-CDMX Unveils Actions to Combat Child Labor in Mexico City
Mexico City’s Interinstitutional Commission for the Prevention and Eradication of Child Labor and Protection of Adolescent Workers of Legal Age (CITI-CDMX) approved its initial strategy for the 2025-2026 period. The plan aims to address child labor and support adolescent workers within the legal working age through targeted actions and interinstitutional coordination.
The approved strategy consists of three main pillars. First, it calls for the creation of an interinstitutional registry of families affected by child labor to ensure all relevant entities coordinate their actions. Second, it focuses on conducting targeted diagnostics in specific sectors, with the goal of designing public policies based on solid evidence to address the underlying causes of child labor. Third, the plan stresses the importance of interinstitutional coordination, ensuring that each agency contributes from its area of expertise to avoid fragmented efforts.
The session, held at the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare’s headquarters, was led by the STyFE and included representatives from various government agencies, including the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Economic Development, the Ministry of Health, the Attorney General's Office of Mexico City, the Ministry of Citizen Security, and the System for Integral Family Development (DIF). International organizations such as the International Labour Organization (ILO) and Save the Children also participated, underlining the global dimension of the initiative.
In the coming months, CITI-CDMX will further develop the plan. During its next session in March, the STyFE’s Executive Directorate of Labor Studies will present a diagnosis on the prevalence of child labor across different sectors. This report will help identify specific areas requiring additional support and resources. By April, participating agencies will be required to submit reports detailing their contributions to the national strategy, states STyFE’s.
