Cobee, an employee benefits platform, recently conducted a survey in Mexico, shedding light on the growing importance of employee benefits and the diverse preferences across demographic groups. This research provides valuable insights for companies aiming to design benefits packages that not only attract but also retain employees, thereby fostering long-term satisfaction and loyalty. Specifically, the report highlights the critical significance of personalized benefits, consistent communication, and adaptability as fundamental elements in this endeavor.

Titled "Annual Trends in Benefits Report for Employees in Mexico 2024," the report highlights a significant finding: 93.4% of 1,501 participants aged 16 to 65 perceive extra benefits as a clear indication of companies genuinely caring for their employees. This widely shared sentiment plays a crucial role in the competitive arena of talent attraction and retention. LinkedIn's findings seemed to resonate with those of the report, emphasizing that a competitive benefits package is essential for showcasing appreciation and investment in employees.

As of now, despite a strong desire for benefits beyond legal requirements among employees, only 46.1% of respondents have reported receiving such perks, showcasing a significant disparity between employee expectations and what is actually offered. The most coveted benefits identified include food vouchers (66.9%), savings funds (47.7%), savings accounts (43%), and medical expenses (37.3%), emphasizing the necessity for tailored offerings.

The report reveals a notable shift in employee perception regarding the significance of the home office as a workplace benefit. Only 9% of respondents now consider it an important benefit, which marks a decrease of 13% from the previous year. This change can be attributed to the evolving understanding of the home office, which is no longer seen as merely an additional perk but rather as an integral and permanent aspect of modern work dynamics.

Contrasting the employee preferences outlined in the report with the current provision of benefits in companies, in Mexico, approximately 53.9% receive solely legal benefits, leading to nearly 40% considering job changes. This highlights a significant disparity between employee expectations and the benefits offered by employers, underscoring the imperative for companies to augment their benefit packages. According to Cobee, this discrepancy primarily stems from companies adhering to traditional benefit approaches prevalent in Mexico.

As a result, "[it is crucial to persuade companies] that a slightly higher investment can yield  greater productivity and retention. Simultaneously, raising awareness about the necessity for benefit package change is vital, especially since Mexican companies have been managing benefits almost the same way for the past 20 years,” said Ignacio Travesi, Co-Founder, Cobee.

Highlighting the crucial role of ongoing consultation and communication, Alejandro Domingo, Country Manager at Cobee, underscores the need for constant dialogue between HR professionals and employees. The report sheds light on diverse benefit preferences across demographics, revealing that individuals aged 25 to 35 prioritize expenditures on groceries, fuel, or fitness memberships, whereas those approaching retirement prioritize health insurance coverage.

This underscores an opportunity for companies to enhance their effectiveness in offering benefits by aligning them with individual preferences. Despite advancements made since last year, marked by an increased emphasis on personalized benefits, only 32.7% of respondents acknowledge that their companies currently provide such tailored benefits.

"Effective communication is the linchpin in understanding and meeting the diverse needs of the workforce. At Cobee, we believe that constant dialogue between HR professionals and employees is not just a practice; it [i]s a strategic imperative for tailoring benefits that resonate with the unique preferences of each individual, fostering a more inclusive and engaged workplace,” states Domingo.
