Social media platforms, particularly TikTok, are transforming the job search and career-building landscape. As traditional job-hunting methods evolve, more candidates are turning to video content to stand out in a competitive job market. This shift has brought new opportunities for those looking to make a memorable impression.

Incorporating video into job applications is becoming an increasingly popular way to differentiate oneself. Video submissions offer candidates the chance to showcase their unique abilities and character, making it easier for employers to connect with them on a more personal level, as reported by WorkininAus. With the job market becoming more saturated, standing out is crucial, and video content provides a powerful tool to do so.

One generation that has fully embraced this shift is Gen Z, as reported by The New York Post.

A study conducted by the Adecco Group highlights the significant role Gen Z will play in the future workforce. According to the report, it is projected that by 2030, individuals born between the mid-1990s and early 2000s will comprise approximately one-third of the global workforce, as reported by MBN.

Faced with a challenging job market, they are using social media platforms like TikTok to capture attention. Rather than submitting a traditional resume, many Gen Z job seekers are opting to submit recorded content. According to recent data, 68% of Gen Z prefers to apply for jobs via social media rather than sending in a resume, indicating a clear shift toward more dynamic and engaging forms of application, as reported by Yahoo Finance.

The idea of using TikTok for job applications was introduced by the platform itself in 2021. Recognizing the difficulties many recent graduates face in finding internships and employment, TikTok launched its "TikTok Resumes" initiative to help bridge the gap between job seekers and employers.

“With the rise of career and job-related creative content, TikTok believes there is an opportunity to bring more value to people's experience with TikTok by enhancing the utility of the platform as a channel for recruitment,” says the social media platform.

While video applications are unlikely to replace written resumes entirely, they are expected to become an increasingly common element of the job application process. According to a LinkedIn survey conducted in March 2021, 79% of hiring managers reported that video had become more important for evaluating candidates, as reported by BBC. In fact, 61% of job seekers agreed that recorded video could become the new standard for cover letters, further signaling the growing importance of video in the hiring landscape.
