Ditch the Manual and Start the Real Team-Improvement Adventure
STORY INLINE POST
“Success is achieved by following a magic formula.” This is the idea that is sold so often in the corporate world: a rigid process with predefined steps, if followed exactly, will give your company magic results. But, while structure and process are really important, when it comes to improving our team, the reality is much more dynamic (and exciting). Please, forget the manual and get ready for a great adventure!
Imagine you are climbing a mountain. Would you follow a map drawn decades ago without considering the current conditions? Of course not. The same goes for your team. Needs, challenges, and context are constantly changing. Flexibility is your best tool to adapt, adjust course, reach the summit, and not die in the process.
Cultivating flexibility requires a real mindset shift. It's about embracing change, being open to new ideas, and letting go of the need to control every single detail. Encourage your team to experiment, to learn from mistakes, and to see setbacks as opportunities for growth not tragedies.
Flexibility is the key to adapting to new terrain, to new opportunities, and new realities. Think of a soccer team. They have a game plan, but they don't blindly stick to it. They observe the opponent's strategy, adapt to the flow of the game, and make adjustments as needed. This agility is what allows them to win matches. Similarly, your team needs to be able to react to new information, shifting priorities, and unexpected obstacles on the go.
Change can be difficult and scary, but why not make it a fun challenge to solve, allowing yourself and your team to enjoy the wonder of it. Celebrate milestones, no matter how small. Recognize individual contributions and team efforts. Create a culture of learning where everyone feels safe to take risks, ask questions, and share ideas. When people feel valued and supported, they are more likely to be engaged, motivated, and productive.
If the road to improvement becomes a tedious process, motivation will vanish. Add a dose of fun and keep the sense of wonder alive. Encourage creativity, and foster continuous learning. A team that enjoys the process goes further.
Think of a child learning to ride a bike. They fall, they get up, they try again, and they laugh along the way. The joy of discovery fuels their persistence. Bring that same spirit to your team. Make the journey of improvement an engaging and rewarding experience.
Change is like an expedition, so you will need guides. Having mentors is crucial; they can see more, further, and faster than you because they are experienced guides who inspire you, provide new perspectives, and help you overcome obstacles. But how do you find the right mentors?
-
Mutual trust and respect: The mentor-mentee relationship is based on trust and respect. Open and honest communication is essential for a successful mentorship so think of people you really admire and respect.
-
Shared values: Connect with people who share your values and vision. A mentor should be someone you admire and respect, someone who embodies the qualities you aspire to develop to become a better you.
-
Willingness to share: A good mentor is willing to share their knowledge and time. They are invested in your growth and are genuinely interested in helping you succeed. A good mentor is constantly giving. Keep your eyes open to find yours.
-
Relevant experience: Make sure they have experience in the areas where you need support. Seek out mentors who have navigated similar challenges and can offer valuable insights.
Finding the right mentor can be a game-changer and get you faster across the challenge of change. They can provide guidance, support, and encouragement when you need it most. They can help you see your blind spots, challenge your assumptions, and expand your horizons.
Last but not least, make sure to maintain open communication with your team. This will be the map that guides you through change. Regular team meetings, one-on-one conversations, and online communication channels can all contribute to open communication. The key is to establish clear expectations, provide opportunities for dialog, and actively listen to what your team members have to say.
Create a safe space where everyone feels comfortable expressing their thoughts and feelings. Encourage constructive feedback, both positive and negative. Foster a culture of collaboration where everyone feels heard and respected.
A united team communicates openly. Share your perspectives, ideas, and expectations with clarity and transparency. At the same time, actively listen to the voices of your team. Their ideas, suggestions, and concerns are valuable for charting the best course.
Improving your team is not about following a manual, but about embarking on an exciting adventure. Make sure that your backpack for this adventure is full of flexibility, fun, wonder, the right mentors, and open communication. Dare to explore, learn, and grow together.
Now, I wonder, do you dare?
