On average, employers only have 44 days to either solidify a new hire's commitment or drive them to regret their decision, reveals a BambooHR report.
This limited short underscores the pivotal importance of onboarding, which can serve to significantly diminish any new hire resentment, says Talent Board Mexico. This capacity holds particular significance in the talent-hungry tech sector, where 77.6% of tech employees deem onboarding as a vital measure of their employer's commitment to their success.
According to the report, about 44% of new employees admit to harboring regrets or second thoughts about their new job opportunity within the very first week. Moreover, a significant 23% disclosed that they shed tears during their initial days on the job, according to BambooHR. Meanwhile, 70% of new hires admitted to making up their minds about whether a new job was a suitable fit within the first month, with 29% forming their judgment within the first week. These findings emphasize that recruiting top talent is not merely about sending an offer letter but rather an intricate process that involves nurturing a positive work environment from day one.
"These findings show that recruiting top talent does not end with an offer letter," says Anita Grantham, Head of HR, BambooHR. The significance of the initial 44 days in a new employee's journey emphasizes the importance of instilling confidence by conveying the company's mission, values and outlining potential growth and success opportunities within the organization, she added.
An overlooked purpose of the onboarding process is the opportunity to establish workplace friendships, something valued by 87% of new hires. Additionally, 93% of respondents express a strong interest in shadowing a colleague, underscoring the pivotal role that effective onboarding plays during the initial phases of employment. These findings are in line with the insights from Talent Board's research, which emphasizes the critical influence of onboarding and personal relationships in crafting a favorable initial impression.
In Mexico, 77.6% of tech professionals emphasize the pivotal role of onboarding in not only presenting the company's culture but also providing insights into their day-to-day responsibilities. Frequently, new hires encounter common challenges, including a lack of clarity regarding individuals who can address their inquiries (65%), insufficient training on company offerings (62%) and technological difficulties (51%). Addressing these challenges during onboarding not only helps new hires integrate more smoothly but also fosters a positive and productive work environment.
"Team members who undergo a successful onboarding experience are more inclined to exhibit a strong commitment to the organization, seamlessly assimilate into the company culture and have the capacity to make valuable contributions in a shorter time frame. Additionally, it is imperative to seek feedback from new hires regarding the onboarding process and inquire about their requirements for additional tools, information, or interpersonal connections necessary for their roles," Lorena Ruiz tells MBN.
Similarly, experts recommend implementing a "buddy system," in which new hires are paired with experienced employees. This approach enables tenured employees to personalize the onboarding experience, serve as a point of contact and provide valuable insights about team processes and organizational culture.
