Future Jobs vs. Old Aspirations: Data Reveals Talent Disconnect

Mexico is facing a widening gap between educational choices and labor market needs as new research from national and international institutions signals a misalignment between what people study and the jobs that will exist in the coming decades. Findings from the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO) and the OECD show persistent expectations for traditional professions despite declining demand and the rise of skills shaped by digital transformation.

IMCO’s 2025 Compara Carreras analysis reports that most university enrollments remain concentrated in conventional fields that are projected to experience oversupply. If current trends persist, Mexico will produce almost 29 million professionals in saturated areas by 2050 while technical education continues to lose ground. “Fostering a learning mindset involves empowering employees to take ownership of their own learning journeys, beyond formal training programs,” said Víctor Velázquez, Chief People Officer, Clip, describing employer responses to evolving workforce needs.

The disconnect begins early. According to the OECD’s study The State of Global Teenage Career Preparation, career aspirations of 15-year-olds have barely changed in two decades, even as the labor market undergoes significant transformation. Half of girls and 44% of boys across OECD countries expect to enter only 10 occupations, concentrated in roles such as medicine, education, and law. This pattern is strongest among high-performing students, those from advantaged socioeconomic backgrounds, and urban populations. Yet demand is rising for cognitive, technological, and interpersonal skills, indicating that emerging roles may require different preparation than what most students currently pursue.

IMCO’s latest findings reveal a growing mismatch between what students study and where the labor market offers the strongest returns. In 2025, the best-paid degrees are concentrated in technology, engineering, and specialized professional services, led by multidisciplinary ICT innovation programs (MX$25,761), medicine (MX$25,732), public administration (MX$25,678), political science (MX$25,288), and civil engineering (MX$25,259). These careers benefit from sustained demand in digital transformation, public-sector strengthening, and infrastructure development.

On the other end of the spectrum, IMCO identifies persistent low-income levels in traditional social and educational fields. The lowest-paid degrees include educational orientation (MX$14,238), food industry studies (MX$14,585), social work (MX$14,988), preschool and primary teacher training (MX$15,495–16,237), and therapy, rehabilitation, and nutrition (MX$15,726–16,646). These areas face slower wage growth and limited job absorption, signaling structural challenges for future graduates.

While income is one indicator of career prospects, IMCO warns that even some high-earning fields today may face reduced demand by 2050. It lists social sciences, education, arts and humanities, natural sciences, health, engineering, services, and agronomy among disciplines projected to shrink in labor market relevance.

Career misalignment is especially pronounced among disadvantaged students, who show higher levels of uncertainty and less access to career preparation activities. Across OECD countries, 20% of students expect to enter professions requiring tertiary education while planning to complete only upper secondary school. Among disadvantaged students, the figure rises to 34%, compared with 11% among their more advantaged peers. Participation in internships, workplace visits, and employer engagement remains limited, contributing to mismatched expectations. Research shows that students exposed to several employer-linked experiences are more likely to secure employment or remain in education by age 26 and tend to achieve better career alignment.

Organizations working to narrow these gaps emphasize systemic change. Ursula Quijano, Mexico Country Lead, Laboratoria, said that the gender gap in technology illustrates how structural and cultural dynamics shape workforce access. Women continue to carry a disproportionate share of unpaid care work and remain underrepresented in STEM pathways and leadership. Fewer than 30% of entry-level and managerial roles in tech are held by women, and less than one in five leadership positions are occupied by women. Quijano said companies can influence this by designing policies that support shared caregiving responsibilities and encouraging male leaders to model such practices.

AI adoption is reshaping job profiles across industries. One in four jobs is at risk of automation, with women three times more likely than men to occupy roles vulnerable to these shifts. Job postings requiring AI skills grew from 6% in 2024 to 11% in 2025. Companies remain uncertain about how to integrate AI into operations, highlighting the need for clearer frameworks and upskilling programs.

As Mexico assesses how to close the gap between educational paths and future market conditions, institutions emphasize evidence-based career guidance and early exposure to real labor conditions. Policymakers, employers, and educators face pressure to expand skills development and ensure students have reliable information about long-term prospects. Researchers argue that addressing these challenges requires a system that adapts to economic shifts while expanding participation in sectors central to future growth.
