Congress approved an initiative that doubled the days of vacations that Mexican workers had were entitled to. Employee well-being continues to be prioritized and expectations show this to remain a priority in 2023. Meanwhile, OIT highlighted the potential that nature-based solutions have to create millions of jobs, while other social challenges are addressed.

Nature-Based Jobs Benefit Society

The Decent Work in Nature-Based Solutions report says that 20 million jobs could be created if nature was leveraged to overcome the main challenges that society faces. As of today, 75 million people have jobs based on nature and the majority of them live in Asia and the Pacific. “What this report brings to light is how to make nature-based solutions work for people and the economy and this will be a key success factor. Achieving this requires a broad-based coalition led by youth,” said Susan Gardner, Ecosystem’s Division Director, PNUMA. The report invites different actors to implement just transition policies to mitigate employment risks.

More Vacations for Mexican Workers 

On Dec. 14, 2022, the Mexican Congress approved an initiative that doubled the number of vacations of Mexican workers starting in 2023. With this initiative, workers will have the right to increase their vacation days to 12 after the first year of working with the same company. Employees will have the right to choose whether to take those days altogether or to scatter them throughout the year.
