Mexico Loses 46,378 Jobs in June: IMSS
As of June 30, 2025, Mexico's formal labor market recorded 22.3 million jobs registered at the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). Of the total, 87.5% are permanent positions, the highest share recorded for June in the past 16 years, while 12.5% are temporary.
The number of registered jobs in June decreased by 46,378, representing a monthly decline of 0.2%. Despite this drop, job creation for the first half of 2025 totaled 87,287 positions. On a year-over-year basis, the net increase was 6,222 jobs, equivalent to an annual growth rate of 0.03%. The sectors showing the highest annual percentage growth were commerce, electricity, and transportation and communications. the State of Mexico, Michoacan, and Nuevo Leon saw job growth rates exceeding 2.0%.
The average base salary of workers affiliated with IMSS reached MX$628.8 (US$31.44) per day at the end of June. This figure represents the second highest salary recorded historically and reflects a 7.5% nominal annual increase. Since January 2019, the base salary has consistently grown at annual rates of 6.0% or more.
Employer registrations with IMSS totaled 1.04 million as of June, marking a 2.9% year-over-year decrease.
In addition to formal employment, IMSS provides healthcare coverage to 8.4 million people through alternative affiliation schemes. This includes 7.97 million individuals under the facultative insurance scheme, 150,118 people under the Voluntary Family Health Insurance program, and 266,403 individuals enrolled through the Voluntary Continuation of the Mandatory Regime.
The number of domestic workers registered with IMSS reached 60,073 in June, with an expected 98,460 potential beneficiaries. Their average daily salary is MX$446.9 (US$22.35).
For self-employed workers, 336,239 positions were registered during the same month, with an estimated 551,096 potential beneficiaries. Their average daily salary is MX$331.8 (US$16.59).
