Mexico Proposes Law to Strengthen Support for Startups

Mexican lawmakers are pushing for stronger support of the local economy through entrepreneurship. Néstor Camarillo, President, Economic Promotion and Entrepreneurship Commission, is advancing a Federal Entrepreneurship Law designed to provide greater certainty and stability for entrepreneurs.

"Mexico is a nation with a deep entrepreneurial spirit, as evidenced by the large number of businesses across the country," says Luis Donaldo Colosio, Movimiento Ciudadano Senator.

In Mexico, about half of the population has attempted to start a business at some point, according to IPSOS. However, Camarillo says that 70% of these ventures do not survive beyond their first two years, often pushing entrepreneurs into the informal economy.

The proposed legislation aims to prevent this by offering more reliable support for young talent and startups, especially in light of the challenges Mexico faces in its relationship with the United States. The law and its associated initiatives aim to address the role of entrepreneurship in Mexico’s economic development. By providing clearer guidelines and stronger support systems, the government seeks to assist startups and promote long-term economic stability.

Francisco Chíguil, MORENA Senator, argues that regional policies are crucial for increasing economic activity, particularly in high-impact industries. Meanwhile, Juanita Guerra, PVEM Senator, stresses the need for a strong foundation built on training, a comprehensive legal framework, improved access to supply chains, and the promotion of technology. "Entrepreneurship is key to consolidating Mexico’s economy," says Guerra.
