Nurturing High-Performance Teams: A Guide for HR Directors, CEOs
STORY INLINE POST
Successful businesses are built by great teams crafted and managed by visionary leaders. As HR directors and CEOs, your mission is to cultivate high-performance teams that drive your business forward. Leadership is crucial, but even the best vision falls short without a talented team.
Imagine your company as a ship at sea: the entrepreneur is the captain charting the course, but it's the crew who handles the sails and keeps the boat moving. A renowned business management consultant, Jim Collins, famously said, "First who, then what." When faced with any challenge or opportunity, a leader's first step is identifying who has the right knowledge and skills for success. It’s about assembling the right team, equipping them to excel, and letting them do their best work.
Entrepreneurs and CEOs often struggle with team performance because they reverse this order. They decide what they want to do and then choose people to execute it. The healthiest approach for growth, however, is to develop a strategy as a team. As Collins puts it: “If we get the right people on the bus, in the right seats, and the wrong people off the bus, we can drive in the right direction.”
You might ask, “What if I have a small number of employees?” It’s a valid question. According to the "Radiography of Entrepreneurship in Mexico" study by ASEM, 85% of companies in the country have fewer than 10 employees. Precisely when you have few employees, it becomes even more critical to have the right people. Each team member is crucial in their role, so every hire must be strategic, focusing on attracting individuals with the skills, aptitudes, and attitudes necessary for success. A poor hire can cost significant time and money, something a small business striving for profitability cannot afford.
Another key aspect of growing a team is developing a healthy culture. Management guru Peter Drucker asserts, "Culture eats strategy for breakfast." What is the daily environment in your office like? Is it a positive place? Does your team treat each other with respect? Where is their attention and focus? Productive and happy workplaces don’t happen by accident; they result from a leader’s effort to create a vision that inspires everyone, values that guide and reward positive behavior, and goals that motivate and challenge the team. Your company’s culture is part of your legacy. If you let it happen by default, neither you nor your employees will be comfortable with the results.
In a previous column, I discussed the need for leaders to continually grow in knowledge and skills to be prepared for challenges. You must pay the same attention to the growth of your employees; they are on the front lines, executing your vision. Great leaders are those who grow their team and help them become successful leaders.
Finally, a team can have great players but it won’t succeed if they don’t play as a unit. Team alignment becomes increasingly essential as you work to scale. Teams must eventually become autonomous and self-managing to drive the company’s growth.
Companies are built and managed by teams, so it is crucial to have the tools to develop the people who will grow the company. This will grant you the freedom as a leader to focus on the bigger picture. If your focus is on execution and maintaining operations, you risk becoming a slave to your business, where everything depends on you.
