PROFECO Monitors Back to School Prices as SEP Issues Supply List

The Federal Consumer Protection Office (PROFECO) has launched a nationwide price monitoring effort ahead of the 2025–2026 school year, following the release of the suggested school supply list by the Ministry of Public Education (SEP). The initiative aims to protect family budgets during the back-to-school season by ensuring fair market prices for essential items.

Mario Delgado Carrillo, Minister of Public Education, says that the supply list is part of the government's broader effort to reduce the financial strain on families. “This initiative contributes to the economic well-being of households while supporting access to education,” says Delgado. He adds that PROFECO will oversee price compliance and ensure that retailers maintain transparency during the peak shopping period.

The school supply list covers basic materials for preschool, primary, and secondary students in both public and private schools throughout Mexico. It aligns with the New Mexican School (NEM) model, promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration. While the SEP provides a core list, teachers may suggest additional tools based on their educational plans and classroom contexts. However, schools are instructed not to make any materials compulsory if they represent a financial burden.

PROFECO’s role in the process is twofold: provide guidance on reasonable pricing and enforce consumer protections. The agency’s efforts include surveillance of physical and online retailers to prevent price hikes or deceptive practices. This regulatory oversight is designed to maintain affordability and ensure market stability during a critical spending period for Mexican households.
