A Structural Shift Toward Skills-Based Recruitment

Companies pivot back to skills-based recruitment after two years of heightened talent scarcity, a win-win for all market participants. Mexico Business News has invited industry leaders from Soriana, Mattel and Globalization Partners to address a return to skills-based recruitment, how it has changed recruitment and its longevity beyond 2022.

Companies often fall back on skills-based recruitment when the employment market gets tight, as it did amid the Great Resignation. This market shock forced companies to move away from the standard proxy of college degrees and towards skills-based recruitment, in turn forcing companies to think more carefully about the capabilities they look for and describe them explicitly. This shift helped companies expand their talent pool and removed a significant barrier to entry for many labor market participants attempting to break into higher paid positions.

Among the most demanded capabilities across all industrial sectors are digital skills, an urgent priority for companies that are attempting to accelerate their digital transformations. Complementary to this, human resources departments have reemphasized the value of soft skills, important eligibility criteria now that hybrid and remote work models are here to stay. Since both hard and soft skills are rooted in structural changes occurring at a global scale, it is likely that they will remain important qualifiers even as the labor market finds equilibrium.

While there are outliers to this recruitment strategy, in Mexico this trend will likely remain a standard given that local firms increasingly have to compete with US companies with more lucrative value propositions. Internally, this will force Mexican companies to explicitly outline their desired skills and where they will be willing to compromise if needed. From a grander perspective, this trend is tied to a grander transformation of the recruitment process.

Mexico Talent Forum, now hosted on Zoom, will break geographical barriers and welcome global industry leaders to discuss the most pressing labor trends, while simultaneously minimizing COVID-19 related risks or possible outbreaks. The event is organized by Mexico Business, which hosts conferences on Mexico’s most important industries and in 2021 welcomed 2,136 industry-shaping companies and 758 speakers to 13 industry-leading conferences.
