The Official Mexican Norm NOM-035, issued by the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, seeks to establish the minimum conditions to guarantee security, health and a proper working environment to prevent accidents and occupational diseases. Although this is a national law, its conditions may differ depending on the number of employees at work.

In case you missed it, this is what made the headlines in talent over the week!

  • Empresas por el Bienestar (Companies for Welfare) is an initiative of 100 companies launched to ensure that, as of December 1, 2019, no employees receive an income of less than $MX6,500 (US$340) per month. Some of the companies joining the initiative are Citibanamex, Nestlé Mexico, Grupo Pochteca, Empresas Tajín, Corporación Zapata, Laureate Education (UVM, Unitec), Arca Continental and Estafeta.

  • The National Minimum Wages Commission (CONASAMI), led by Andrés Peñaloza Méndez, opened the debate on how wage increases will take place. State, trade unionists and even employers believe that Mexico's minimum wage will not cease to increase in 2020. Experts agree on a forecast of a 16 percent increase in wages for next year.

  • Luisa María Alcalde Luján, Minister of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS) announced that after 10 months of starting Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro (Youngsters Building the Future), the program reached over 15,000 hirings. By month 13, the program will increase employment opportunities to promote auto-employment training for those already in the program.
