Zeki Research, a UK-based talent intelligence platform, has unveiled its inaugural Women in AI 2024 report. Key findings from the report indicate that despite the greater generation of top AI women professionals, they receive 30% less visibility and recognition compared to men, hindering their advancement within the field.

The report's findings, drawn from the largest AI dataset in existence, offer unparalleled insights into the status of women in the AI field, shedding light on challenges, opportunities, and trends shaping the industry landscape, as reported by Yahoo Finance.

“The presence of women in technological fields is increasing, but there are challenges in some areas such as AI, which has seen few women taking leadership roles. It is crucial to acknowledge the valuable contribution that women can offer the field. Their participation will support the growth of the field, and it is the responsibility of all of us to promote their participation,” said Gustavo Barcia, CEO, Needed to MBN.

The report's central revelation is the significant disparity faced by women in AI concerning visibility and recognition as their careers progress. Zeki Research's data, comprising over 133,000 individuals and 2 million unique data points, provides a comprehensive assessment of more than 33,000 women from 109 countries, allowing for precise insights into the status of women in AI globally.

The report reveals that despite the increasing generation of top AI women talent, gender representation in major AI labs remains stagnant, with women comprising only 22% of scientists and engineers. Moreover, prominent women AI professionals are drawn to smaller companies, citing continuity and a conducive environment for impactful work. This highlights failures from larger AI labs to include more women, which holds long-term consequences for the advancement of this technology.

On the other hand, the report also commended companies for surpassing industry average hiring rates for women professionals, such as Intuit, ETS AI Labs, and Bayer, indicating the importance of proactive recruitment strategies. Overall, the healthcare and consultancy sectors stand out for effectively attracting top women AI talent, with both experiencing triple-digit growth of women’s workforce participation in the past decade.

As the world strives for technological advancement, leveraging the full spectrum of talent remains imperative for innovation and sustainable progress. "The growth potential of AI is unimaginable; it is mandatory for women to participate," said Patricia Chávez, Mexico’s City Regional Director of the Computer Science Department, Tecnológico de Monterrey.
