Data localization policies have spread around the world on the basis of national security, conflicting with the sprawling digital infrastructures of global companies. To address the growing need for data localization in Mexico, Akamai Technologies has constructed a new data scrubbing center, enabling companies to keep their traffic within the country rather than having to send it to the US and back. This center is part of a larger strategic plan by the company to expand its data scrubbing network to 38 locations by the end of the year, according to a company announcement.

"National companies utilizing data centers in Mexico often find it unnecessary to send their data to scrubbing centers located in the US, such as those in Texas, California, or Florida. Although the penalties for doing so may be measurable but not immediately perceivable, the impact becomes noticeable when data begins crossing borders. With the addition of new data scrubbing centers, we are now able to keep data localized, mitigating these penalties and improving overall efficiency,” Clator Butler, Senior Sales Specialist, Akamai, tells Mexico Business News.

The rise of data localization policies around the world has created a complex challenge for companies operating in the digital space. With the emergence of cloud and edge computing, the infrastructure for data storage and processing has become increasingly sprawling and interconnected, often spanning multiple countries and regions. However, data localization policies require companies to keep data within national borders, creating a clash between the need for data accessibility and the need to comply with national regulations. This has led to a growing demand for solutions that enable companies to keep their data localized while still maintaining the efficiency and speed of cloud and edge computing.

To meet the growing demand for localized data solutions, Akamai Technologies has re-architected its security platform, making it leaner, more efficient and easier to deploy, says Butler. The company is fortifying this value proposition with the expansion of its data scrubbing network, currently consisting of 29 nodes; choosing locations for its content delivery network based on bandwidth purchases and locations for its content delivery network. With the inauguration of its data scrubbing center in Mexico City in April, the company is on track to close the year with 38 network nodes by the end of 2023. With this proximity, Akamai is reaffirming its commitment to the Mexican digital economy and taking steps to mitigate latency and lag time concerns for national companies by ensuring secure data transit.

Mexican companies are facing the challenge of securing their digital infrastructure while ensuring it meets their business needs and adheres to cybersecurity requirements. This can be a complex and time-consuming task, particularly as they navigate data localization policies. Akamai Technologies provides a solution by offering an agnostic approach to origin technology, working with any service providers to create a secure network perimeter that protects against cyberthreats. With Akamai's network of data scrubbing centers, Mexican companies gain access to a reliable and efficient cybersecurity solution while they figure out the ideal digital architecture for their business. By integrating with any provider, Akamai is able to provide a consistent level of security across all environments, simplifying the process for Mexican companies to protect their data and networks against potential cyberattacks.
