It is official. Apple will start using its own processors on Mac computers. The company will use Apple's ARM processors to bid Intel and its x86 architecture farewell, which has been used for the past 15 years, the company said during the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference 2020 (WWDC).

According to the company, Apple Silicon, its new ARM processor, will help keep the computer's temperature longer. This move is not new, since Apple began using its own chips on Macs in 2007. The modem chips, which connect devices with wireless data networks, have always been supplied by companies outside of Apple. Mac's business at Apple generated US$7.16 billion in revenue in 4Q19.

Apple's decision is due, in part, to the fact that in July 2019 the bitten apple company bought part of Intel's business for US$1 billion. Earlier that year, Apple and Qualcomm agreed to dismiss all litigation between the two companies over patent licensing practices. The settlement included at least a US$4.5 billion payment from Apple to Qualcomm. The companies also reached a six-year license agreement and a multiyear supply agreement.

At WWDC 2020, the company also introduced macOS Big Sur, the latest operating system for Apple computers. With this system, Safari will be 50 percent faster than Chrome, it will be able to monitor crawlers and security flaws and will make it easier to migrate extensions from other browsers since it will be possible to choose in which sites the extensions work. In addition, after years of requesting it, Apple said it is already in talks with Microsoft to incorporate the Office package into its system.

Apple also announced updates to its operating system, iOS 14 (available from iPhone 6S onwards), which will respond to the demands of users living in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic and economic depression, the California-based company said. One of the changes focused on the mapping system that improved the routes for those who choose to use the bicycle as a means of transport to avoid contagion on public transport. With this tool, users will have more precise information to navigate, such as specific directions to reach their destination by bicycle or even details about the journey such as the slope of the route.

The company also announced updates for the Apple Watch operating system, WatchOS 7, such as the detection of functions such as washing hands, an activity that has a recommended duration of 20 seconds, which can be counted with a timer.

In Mexico, Apple stores remain closed in most states as the epidemiological traffic-light stays in orange. A few weeks ago, stores in China closed again after COVID-19 cases re-emerged. "We monitor the situation closely and have taken this action as a precaution. We look forward to welcoming our teams and clients again as soon as possible," said a spokesperson.
