Efficient Processors Allow for Better Data-Driven Solutions

Q: How has the market changed in recent years regarding technology in the data-driven industry?

A: We are focusing more on data-oriented solutions because information is becoming increasingly important for companies around the world. The most important businesses in the world are related to data management, which was not the case 10 years ago. The trend further accelerated following the COVID-19 pandemic. The data generated by the multiple devices in use is being leveraged by high-level applications, such as artificial intelligence (AI), analytics, marketing and entertainment. 

AMD wants to be present across the entire ecosystem of data management. Our technologies are already being used to process and analyze data from computers, video consoles, vehicles and many other devices and so our presence is growing stronger in the large data centers and advanced computing infrastructure that manages and analyzes these data.


Q: How did the acquisition of Xilinx and Pensando lead AMD to reboot its brand identity and business model? 

A: With Xilinx and Pensando, we will be incoursing further in the infrastructure that transmits data, such as satellites, antennas and 5G systems. This will allow us to create better adaptive computing, which lets businesses dedicate processors to unique functions. Xilinx is focused on the field of high-performance computing, we added adaptive computing so engineers would not have to worry about buying extra processors as they can take advantage of everything in the cores of their current processors. 

Our strategy remains the same: help users face the new digital era with high performance and adaptive computing across the whole spectrum of data business. 


Q: AMD describes itself as an IT organization creating IT products, how does this approach help drive innovation?

A: AMD has traditionally been a company focused on high performance, whether on gaming or productivity, we develop technology to enable people and businesses to do more. However, as the world changes into a more digital environment, social and economically speaking, our enterprise solutions must reflect that commitment into performance. The bigger picture is that AMD is a leader in HPC, high performance computing as its core; and that is now further than what an individual can do with a notebook or a PC. 

Today, we are a key part in the most powerful supercomputer in the world, Frontier, a technology cluster made for scientific research, a solution that could advance knowledge in everything from medicine to biology to material science to deep space to climate change. That is the kind of power we are embracing through these acquisitions: turn high performance computing into adaptive computing, making technology and innovation better, faster, smarter and more powerful for everyone.


Q: What role will these acquisitions play in AMD’s mission to shape “the capabilities of nearly every service and product defining the future of computing” in Mexico?

A: We plan to open new business opportunities into the corporate, telecommunications, fintech, manufacturing and retail markets and develop an even stronger portfolio that fulfills the specific needs of these spheres. Our larger servers, data centers and EPYC will allow us to enter the 5G and telecommunications sector.  

We listen to our client’s challenges and strategies for the digital transformation to design technology alongside our partners. Our goal is to develop the best solution for these companies and give them valuable advice as they transition to the cloud or develop their own unique infrastructure. At AMD, we are shifting toward a more consultative selling approach.


Q: As a company in hyper-growth, what considerations and concerns do you have regarding scalability?

A: Fintech and telecommunications will grow sharply. Retail also offers a great opportunity for development but it comes with many challenges due to the nature of the industry. We are also targeting the entertainment sector, specifically events and movie theaters that require the efficiency brought by digitalization. Companies that do not adopt data-centric models are doomed to lose market share and the efficiencies they need to compete.

We have a powerful and integral product portfolio. For example, AMD built 6-nm processors for computers and servers. The smaller the node that manages the mathematical processing, the less energy needed and the more capacity available in the chip. We see many opportunities because our new technology is the best in the market. 


Q: How does AMD wish to advance Mexico’s data ecosystem? 

A: As a country, it is indeed a challenge to build the infrastructure needed. It is more common for the private sector to invest in its own proprietary technology solutions but the government is being slow in implementing the 5G antenna communication infrastructure. While the public sector is building the infrastructure, it is not moving at the speed that the market requires, which is why the private businesses are taking these steps.


Q: What ambitions does AMD have regarding the development and deployment of AI applications? 

A: We have the best of both worlds: the CPU technology and the GPU technology. Applying more computational power in data analysis makes for a more efficient use of AI. AIs basically collect the data analyzed through algorithms that anticipate a trend and try to anticipate the next possible step. But this process requires large quantities of data and data analysis. Using our GPUs, AIs can grow a great deal. 


Q: Companies increasingly need greater data transfer, processing and analysis capabilities. What does this demand imply for AMD’s manufacturing and innovation processes?

A: Our technology can help us understand how to help our customers. We start by asking questions about revenue and growth expectations, among many others, to understand the challenges each company faces. This is an extensive process, but our focus is into help clients solve their most important challenges through a valuable data management chain. 


Q: What objectives does AMD Mexico hope to realize in 2022-2023?

A: AMD has never had as strong a portfolio as it does today. Companies now have many more alternatives to increase efficiency. As more companies strive to be sustainable, they should be aware that they have alternatives to increase their computing power without increasing their emissions.
