FIFA World Cup 2026 Is Reshaping Mexico's Technology Landscape

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is accelerating investments in surveillance systems, biometric identity verification, connectivity infrastructure, digital payments, and smart venue operations across Mexico. Beyond a one-month tournament, these deployments are creating long-term opportunities for providers, operators, and public authorities.

 

As Mexico prepares to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, technology has emerged as a central pillar of the country's operational strategy. From AI-enabled video surveillance and biometric access systems to 5G connectivity and digital payments, the tournament is becoming a catalyst for infrastructure modernization with implications that extend well beyond sports.

"The World Cup represents a challenge that forces organizations to efficiently use the data generated at airports and around FIFA Fan Fest perimeters," says Alejandro Aguirre, Commercial Director, Axis Communications Mexico.

Aguirre emphasizes that the World Cup has become a large-scale technology deployment exercise that tests the capabilities of cities, transportation systems, public safety agencies, hospitality operators, telecommunications providers, and digital service ecosystems.

The Biggest World Cup in History

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the largest edition in the tournament's history, featuring 48 national teams, 104 matches, and an expected global audience exceeding five billion viewers. For its part, Mexico expects over 5.5 million tourists during the competition.

The scale of this influx is forcing public and private stakeholders to address operational challenges that range from border processing and crowd management to digital transactions, transportation logistics, and venue security.

Unlike previous tournaments, the technology infrastructure deployed for the 2026 World Cup is expected to leave a permanent legacy. Investments made for the event are increasingly viewed as long-term modernization projects rather than temporary operational expenditures.

This trend is particularly visible in Mexico's physical security sector. According to the 2025 Mexican Physical Security Market Assessment report, developed by the Security Industry Association Mexico and Omdia, Mexico's security equipment market reached US$737 million in 2024. The organizations project the sector will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 9% through 2028, exceeding the global average of 8.2%.

The World Cup is emerging as one of the primary drivers behind that growth.

Video Surveillance Becomes a Priority

The most visible technology deployment ahead of the tournament involves video surveillance. According to data presented by Kenia Caballero, Director, Security Industry Association Mexico, installations of surveillance cameras linked to World Cup preparations increased 46% in strategic locations surrounding Mexico City International Airport and nearby areas. Additional deployments in hotels, transportation systems, tourism corridors, and sports venues have increased between 30% and 50% annually.

Mexico City already operates 119,563 surveillance cameras, making it one of the most monitored urban environments in Latin America. Caballero also notes that the city's surveillance density exceeds that of several international host cities participating in the tournament. Inside Estadio Ciudad de Mexico alone, organizers have deployed about 560 cameras to support tournament operations.

However, the role of these systems extends beyond traditional security functions. Modern video analytics platforms increasingly support crowd-flow monitoring, emergency response coordination, transportation management, incident detection, and operational decision-making.

Large Fan Fest areas planned for locations such as Mexico City's Zocalo, Monterrey's Fundidora Park, and Guadalajara's Plaza Liberacion will require continuous monitoring of crowd density, emergency exits, infrastructure conditions, and public movement patterns.

Rubén Balbuena, Director, Prevencionar Mexico, who was selected by FIFA as host city manager for the Zocalo Fan Fest, identifies overcrowding, structural failures, emergency evacuations, and public safety incidents as key operational risks that require continuous monitoring.

Biometric Identity Systems Expand 

Beyond surveillance, biometric technologies are becoming a critical component of the visitor experience.

According to Infobae, technology providers such as Identy.io are supporting the deployment of mobile biometric verification systems that allow travelers to validate their identities before arriving in Mexico.

These systems can authenticate facial features or fingerprints through mobile devices and generate encrypted digital credentials that facilitate access to services throughout a visitor's stay. The same approach is extending into hotels and stadiums.

Several hospitality operators are implementing self-check-in systems based on QR codes and digital identity validation to reduce congestion during peak demand periods. Meanwhile, ticketing platforms associated with World Cup venues are increasingly linking digital tickets to biometric verification systems designed to prevent fraud, unauthorized access, and ticket resale.

For businesses operating in tourism, hospitality, transportation, and event management, identity technologies represent an opportunity to improve operational efficiency while reducing manual verification processes.

Connectivity and Digital Payments on Test

The World Cup is also expected to accelerate Mexico's digital economy. According to Kushki, about 50% of mobile users already utilize digital wallets. The influx of international visitors is expected to increase adoption further as consumers demand frictionless payment experiences across retail, tourism, transportation, and entertainment environments.

For merchants and service providers, the challenge extends beyond payment acceptance. Transaction volumes are expected to increase substantially, requiring payment processors, cloud infrastructure providers, telecommunications operators, and software vendors to ensure service continuity during periods of peak demand.

At the same time, connectivity infrastructure is becoming a foundational requirement. Industry estimates cited by technology providers indicate that more than 63% of the world's population interacted online during the Qatar World Cup. The figure is expected to increase in 2026 as mobile streaming, social media engagement, digital commerce, and connected venue operations continue to expand.

As a result, private 5G networks, cloud-based applications, edge computing infrastructure, and high-capacity wireless networks are becoming strategic investments across host cities.

The Consumer Technology Opportunity

The FIFA World  Cup 2026 is also influencing technology consumption patterns. According to Deloitte estimates cited by Expansión, the 2026 World Cup could contribute approximately US$2.73 billion in added value to Mexico's economy.

Part of that impact is expected to come from consumer electronics demand. Samsung Electronics Mexico projects television sales could increase by as much as 15% during the World Cup cycle. Industry data from Research Nester suggests televisions larger than 65 inches will account for 38.5% of the global 4K television market, reflecting growing demand for premium viewing experiences.

Additional data from the Mexican Online Sales Association (AMVO) indicates that 55% of Mexican consumers prefer online purchasing with home delivery, while 46% cite convenience and reduced travel requirements as primary motivations.

These trends create opportunities not only for device manufacturers, but also for telecommunications providers, streaming platforms, retailers, digital advertisers, and smart-home ecosystem vendors.

A Regional Technology Showcase

Although Mexico's technology transformation is attracting significant attention, the broader North American tournament is becoming a showcase for advanced operational technologies.

In the US, authorities have deployed drone detection systems, counter-drone platforms, facial recognition technologies, and AI-enabled venue management systems across multiple host cities. According to reports cited by WIRED and civil liberties organizations, the US Department of Homeland Security allocated US$115 million for drone and counter-drone technologies associated with major event security.

Canada is pursuing a similar modernization strategy. Toronto has established a command center valued at about US$9 million, while Vancouver has installed 200 additional cameras to support tournament operations.

Together, the three host countries are transforming the World Cup into a large-scale demonstration of how data, connectivity, identity management, and intelligent infrastructure are reshaping the management of mass events.
