Karma3 Labs closed a US$4.5 million seed round for the development of OpenRank, a Web3 decentralized reputation protocol. The round was led by Galaxy and IDEO CoLab Ventures, but also included other investors such as Spartan, SevenX, HashKey, among others. The capital will be used toward growing OpenRank’s adoption and helping launch the protocol’s initial version to developers.
As web3 gets ready to onboard new users, according to the company's press release, the need for trust and reputation mechanisms becomes increasingly paramount. This is why Karma3 Labs, since its founding, has prioritized the development of a trustworthy reputation and rating infrastructure based on the Eigen Trust social graph algorithm.
"A decentralized Internet characterized by fairness and transparency depends on the existence of a robust and open reputation system," reads the company's mission statement.
This guiding principle has led Karma3 Labs to work with various ecosystems such as Metamask, Farcaster, Lens, and others with the goal of implementing reputation computing algorithms. Potential use cases include leveraging a community rating system for app marketplaces such as Metamask Snaps, ranking and recommendation APIs for Lens and Farcaster, using custom blockchain feeds for consumer apps and wallets, and reputation-based voting and governance.
"The team is working with design partners in the categories of decentralized social graphs, wallets, payments, and marketplaces," the website states. However, none of these services have been able to be fully decentralized because, typically, a single entity owns the reputation scores and underlying infrastructure.
To avoid centralized control, Karma3 Labs intends to realize the development of decentralized reputation mechanisms, which should be open source, permissionless, flexible for different contexts, and resilient. "Web3 is the name given to the idea of a new kind of internet service built using decentralized blockchains, i.e., the shared record-keeping systems that use cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum," as explained by the New York Times.
In line with this mission, Karma3 pursued a round of funding for the development of OpenRank, its new decentralized reputation protocol. The fundraising, led by Galaxy Digital and IDEO CoLab Ventures, saw participation from a diverse group of investors, including Spartan, SevenX, HashKey, Flybridge, Delta Fund, Draper Dragon, and Compa Capital. The funding round will allow Karma3 to demonstrate early use cases and facilitate the launch of the v1 protocol for developers.
The OpenRank decentralized reputation protocol will enable developers to create recommendation and sybil-resistance systems for Web3 social graph protocols and integrate reputation scoring directly onto the blockchain within their respective communities, this is intended to make it easier for users to discover, use, finance, read or buy something on the chain without exposing themselves to de risks that centralized systems represent. Additionally, developers can also leverage it to enhance search and discovery capabilities across consumer markets and applications to facilitate data collection and streamline their supply and consumer chains.
According to Karma3 Labs, the OpenRank will lay the foundation for peer-to-peer interactions and collective community intelligence for a decentralized network of trust. This will prevent centralized platforms from dictating or locking users into their proprietary reputation systems, facilitating advancements in various fields such as with on-chain discovery feeds for consumer applications, cryptographic wallet management, and reputation-based voting and governance. In addition, the protocol also aims to implement cyber-attack resistance mechanisms, thereby reducing costs and foster greater trust from web3 users.
