Megacable Invests MX$1.05 Billion in Merida’s Fiber Optic Network
Megacable Holdings is investing a total of MX$1.05 billion (US$56.2 million) in Merida between 2023 and 2026 to expand and maintain its fiber optic infrastructure. This initiative seeks to consolidate the company’s network to strengthen its service offerings in the region’s corporate and residential sectors.
Megacable reports that it has invested over MX$650 million (US$34.78 million) so far in Merida, and will invest about MX$400 million (US$21.4 million) more by 2026 to continue expanding its infrastructure and services. This further investment will enable it to cover 50,000 additional households, which will represent 50% coverage.
The investment is a continuation of a deployment strategy that Megacable began in Yucatan in 2023. The sum will be used to maintain its fiber optic network of over 1,200km, which serves as the backbone for providing services to the corporate, industrial, and public sectors. The company's regional position is further supported by three operational data centers in Merida, which ensure the quality and continuity of its telecommunications services.
According to data from the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT), Megacable holds 4.63% of fixed broadband internet access in Yucatan. The company also accounts for 6.62% of fixed voice access and has a more significant market share in pay television at 26.87%. These figures indicate that while the company has an established presence in the video segment, this investment in fiber optics is a direct effort to strengthen its competitiveness in data and voice services, which are critical for the B2B sector.
The investment plan carries several technical, economic, and market implications that will shape the telecommunications landscape in the state. The capital deployment will result in greater network density, a critical factor in meeting the growing demand for high-speed connectivity from corporations, industrial parks, and public administrations, reports El Economista. The company's business-focused subsidiary, MCM Business Tech-Co, is a key player in executing this strategy, leveraging the fiber optic infrastructure to offer advanced technological solutions and managed services.
By the end of 2025, Megacable plans to achieve 80% household penetration in Merida. From a B2B perspective, greater residential penetration creates economies of scale that allow for more competitive and robust plans for the business sector.
The investment has led to a broader economic impact, says the company. Megacable reports the creation of 700 direct and 2,000 indirect jobs in the state. The modernization and expansion of the telecommunications network enhances the business environment by facilitating process digitalization, access to cloud services, and the implementation of emerging technologies.
