Mexican Data Center Market to be Nurtured by New Association

Key industry leaders coalesce to form the Mexican Association of Data Centers (MEXDC), driven by a commitment to cultivate an ecosystem that could catapult Mexico’s data center industry to global prominence, according to a DatacenterDynamics. An ambition they intend to realize through a coordinated investment strategy aimed at developing specialized talent, supporting infrastructure and a clear, concise regulatory framework. 

“MEXDC will act as a speaker, as a recognizable point of contact, for the needs of the industry, being the interlocutor between the government, the media and society in general, in addition to managing issues related to regulation, economic policy and social,” reads the press release. 

The data center industry is showing increasing interest in Mexico, evidenced by compounding foreign investment into El Bajio, Queretaro. A strategic industrial foothold with estate, utilities and logistics infrastructure; however, several challenges must be addressed to foster sustained growth and development in the industry. These challenges include the need to develop specialized labor, maintain competitive costs for energy and renewable sources, establish a transparent, simple and stable regulatory framework, and ensure the availability of industrial land with access to energy. Addressing these challenges is crucial to solidifying Mexico's position as a desirable destination for data center investment and a key player in the global data center market.

To abate potentially competing interests and facilitate coordination between its founders, Ascenty, DatacenterDynamics, Equinix, Layer9 Data Centers, Odata, Scala Data Centers and KIO, MEXDC will serve as a central point of contact for the industry, acting as an intermediary between the government, media and society at large. They will also be charged with promotion and management of regulatory issues, economic policy and social objectives to safeguard the image and economic importance of the data center industry. Current priorities lie in the promotion of public education programs for the development of qualified personnel and an improved sustainable relationship between data centers and the environment. 

“Any colocation or hyperscale data center company that operates infrastructures in Mexico can become a MEXDC Associate, and any company in the data center ecosystem can participate as partners: manufacturers, integrators, distributors, engineering companies, consultants,” the announcement concludes.
