With the new year starting, it is inevitable that we will get a little nostalgic. It is a time when we reflect on the good and bad things we experienced, a time when we start to define the things we want to improve or implement in the year ahead, when we usually set 12 resolutions: go to the gym, eat healthy, read more often. This time, I would like to add a resolution to the wish list: migrate to the cloud.

I know it sounds a bit drastic and that many think that migrating to the cloud is a challenge, or that your business is small and cloud implementation is not necessary. However, as a result of the events that have occurred in recent years, we know that it is essential to take appropriate measures to deal with any eventuality and, fortunately, the cloud is a great ally for acting in these situations. According to data from the International Data Corporation (IDC), by 2023, cloud services in Latin America will grow by 30.4 percent.

If you are still not convinced that implementing the cloud in your business in 2023 is necessary, here are five reasons to do so in the coming year:

  1. Cloud technologies will redefine sports as we know it. Like music and video, sports will become streams of data that we can analyze. The insights to be gained in the coming years will transform the entire sports industry and redefine what it means to play (and experience) every game.

A clear example of this is F1, a sport that is using AWS technology, such as machine learning (ML) models, data analytics and high-performance computing (HPC) to transform itself into a more competitive and exciting sport.
Similarly, the NFL is already using the power of AWS ML for statistics to improve player health and safety, while providing a better experience for fans, players, and teams in real time.

  1. Simulated worlds will reinvent the way we experience things. These technologies (spatial computing, simulation, digital twins) have gradually matured over the years, but their day-to-day impact is limited. This is changing rapidly and, in 2023, the cloud will make them more accessible, in turn enabling a new class of use cases that will not be limited by physical constraints.

Currently, simulation takes up to 150TB of data and is being used to build better race cars or simulate panoramas with airplanes. However, with technologies like AWS SimSpace Weaver, customers will be able to build, operate and run large-scale space simulations, and thus be able to visualize physical spaces, perform immersive training and more.

  1. Smart energy-related innovation. In the face of the energy crisis we are facing around the world, 2023 will see rapid development on a global scale that will improve the way we produce, store, and consume energy. Machine learning will help analyze data, which will serve to predict usage peaks, better distribute energy, and avoid outages.

  2. Supply chain transformation. The adoption of technologies like  computer vision and deep learning will drive the supply chain. Driverless fleets, autonomous warehouse management and simulation are just some of the optimizations that will lead to a new era in smart logistics and the global supply chain. With IoT sensors proliferating and machine learning, it will be possible to not only predict machine failures but prevent them.

  3. Custom silicon will become widespread and the use of custom-built chips will increase rapidly. Large industries have been affected by the chip shortages experienced in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and, as a result, 2023 will see the pace of innovation accelerate as workloads take advantage of hardware optimizations that maximize performance while reducing power consumption and costs. At AWS, we made a commitment to invest in chip design over the past few years, as we recognize that workloads that enterprises run in the cloud can achieve a  higher performance.

These are the main trends that we see proliferating in 2023. At AWS, we will continue to innovate in order to support industries and our customers with technology solutions that help them become more responsive to rising needs.
