Cleveland Clinic and IBM joined forces to unveil the IBM Quantum System One, the first quantum computer to be leveraged for healthcare research. This system was installed in the Cleveland Clinic and will be used to help researchers identify new medicines, accelerating the pace of drug development.

“This technology holds tremendous promise in revolutionizing healthcare and expediting progress toward new cares, cures and solutions for patients. Quantum and other advanced computing technologies will help researchers tackle historic scientific bottlenecks and potentially find new treatments for patients with diseases like cancer, Alzheimer's and diabetes,” says Tom Mihaljevic, CEO, Cleveland Clinic.

Quantum computing has the potential to transform the healthcare sector by accelerating the diagnostic process, enabling personalized medicine and optimizing pricing. The industry can also benefit from quantum-enhanced machine learning algorithms, according to IBM. "By combining the power of quantum computing, artificial intelligence and other next-generation technologies with Cleveland Clinic's world-renowned leadership in healthcare and life sciences, we hope to ignite a new era of accelerated discovery," says Arind Krishna, CEO, IBM.

Cleveland Clinic and IBM have committed to collaborate in this field through a 10-year partnership announced in March 2021. Through this partnership, the Discovery Accelerator, a joint center dedicated to revolutionizing the pace of discovery in healthcare and life sciences, was established. The Cleveland Clinic-IBM Discovery Accelerator has enabled numerous projects that use cutting-edge technology such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence and hybrid cloud to accelerate breakthroughs in biomedical research.

Through this center, both players are working closely with universities, government agencies, industries, startups and other organizations that are relevant to the field. With this partnership, both players expect to establish a new quantum ecosystem that specifically targets the life sciences industry. The main objective is to improve quantum expertise and support the overall mission of the center.

IBM is working to bring this and other technologies to multiple markets, such as Mexico. “IBM is committed to bringing technology to different markets, including Mexico, which is our second-largest market in Latin America. We aim to provide emerging technologies that can make a large difference thanks to AI, cybersecurity automation and quantum computing,” Mauricio Torres, President and Technology Leader, IBM Mexico, tells MBN.
