Samsung continues to bet on foldable screen technology. This time the South Korean giant unveiled two new smartphones, including a more affordable model that will cost less than US$1,000.

These are the Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G with a starting price of US$999 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 5G at US$1,799. This new generation will be the first to offer water resistance and both feature a new layer on the foldable screen, which is 80 percent more durable than previous foldable screens, the company announced on Wednesday. The phones' aluminum frames use Corning glass on the outside, a scratch- and drop-resistant material. This also marks the first time Samsung brings its S Pen stylus to its foldable phones.

After the problems with the original Samsung Fold, the company addressed user complaints in 2020 with the Galaxy Z Fold 2. However, according to a CNET review, even though the model added premium features, it was still needed to “earn users' trust” and make the phone feel “more like a phone and less like an experiment.” This time the improvements may be what users are actually looking for.

The new Galaxy Z Flip 3 features a 6.7-inch display once unfolded. Its external screen is now four times larger than the last model and can display more information. Its flip screen gives it a higher refresh rate than previous models, which makes scrolling through websites smoother. The phone includes stereo speakers, three cameras and some of the enhanced portrait-mode imaging features first introduced on the latest Galaxy S21 phones.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3, meanwhile, features a 7.6-inch tablet-sized display. Similar to the previous model, this phone also features three cameras on the back, for wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle and zoom images and a fifth camera on the front. This model has water resistance up to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes. However, says CNET, it does not offer dust resistance, “one of the factors that caused screen damage on some reviewers' phones.”

Samsung typically launches new high-end phones, including those with foldable displays, in August, giving it a chance to get its latest flagship products on the market ahead of Apple's new iPhones, typically launched in September. The brands that currently hold the largest market share in Mexico are Samsung, Motorola and Huawei. In 1Q2021, Motorola sold the most smartphones in the country with 21.5 percent, followed by Samsung with 19.5 percent, Xiaomi with 12.2 percent and Apple with 12 percent.
