Sony Music Publishing, in partnership with the sovereign wealth fund GIC, acquired the Recognition Music Group catalog for approximately US$4 billion. This institutional transaction transfers 45,000 premium music rights from Blackstone.

Sony Music Publishing reached an agreement to acquire the complete music rights portfolio of Recognition Music Group from funds managed by Blackstone. The transaction, valued at about US$4 billion, incorporates more than 45,000 songs into the publishing infrastructure of the corporation.

The acquisition highlights the transition of music publishing rights into a matured, institutional asset class capable of attracting large-scale private equity and sovereign wealth. Qasim Abbas, Senior Managing Director and Head of Tactical Opportunities International, Blackstone, says the transaction delivers a strong outcome for investors and represents a further vote of confidence in music rights as an institutionally established asset class.

This transaction is the result of a strategic investment venture announced in early 2026 between Sony Music Group and Singaporean sovereign wealth fund GIC. The partnership focuses on the acquisition and long-term growth of high-quality music catalog assets across multiple genres and international markets.

The assets within Recognition Music Group have a complex corporate history that mirrors the recent "gold rush" in music publishing. The company was originally founded in 2018 as Hipgnosis Songs by Merck Mercuriadis. During the early 2020s, the entity became a prominent player in the market by acquiring hit-heavy catalogs from renowned songwriters and producers. In 2024, Blackstone acquired the company following a period of corporate restructuring and subsequently renamed the entity Recognition Music Group.

This acquisition follows an established pattern of collaboration between the involved parties. In 2025, Sony Music Publishing acquired Hipgnosis Songs Group, further consolidating the assets previously managed under the original Hipgnosis umbrella. The deal for the Recognition portfolio ensures that these 45,000 works are now integrated into a single, vertically integrated management system.

Deal Details

The acquired catalog includes many significant compositions in modern music history. The portfolio features works performed by artists such as Beyoncé, Fleetwood Mac, Rihanna, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Journey, among others. Specific iconic titles transferred in the deal include "Don’t Stop Believin’," "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)," "Go Your Own Way," and "Under the Bridge."

The business logic behind the US$4 billion valuation rests on the stability of streaming platforms. As services like Spotify, Amazon Music, and YouTube continue to expand their global subscriber bases, the royalties generated by these deep catalogs provide a predictable revenue stream. Media companies are increasingly seeking well-known songs to anchor premium content, which drives further value through licensing.

Jon Platt, Chairman and CEO, Sony Music Publishing, says the investment in this extraordinary catalog reflects a belief in the enduring power of great music. Platt says these timeless songs continue to define culture and inspire generations, and it is a privilege to champion their legacy as guardians of their next chapter.

Ben Katovsky, CEO, Recognition Music Group, says it has been an honor to steward this phenomenal catalog. Katovsky says the team is proud of protecting and enhancing the legacy and value of these songs, and he describes the sale as a milestone moment for the company. Following the close of the deal, which is subject to customary closing conditions, Sony will assume full control over the administration of these assets.

The integration of 45,000 songs into the Sony system allows for significant economies of scale. By leveraging existing licensing relationships and proprietary tracking technology, Sony can maximize the "long-tail" value of the Recognition portfolio.

Looking forward, the venture is designed for long-term growth, and the US$4 billion acquisition of Recognition is likely a foundational step rather than a final transaction.
