Summary: Aguascalientes is strengthening investment ties with Canada and Japan to accelerate foreign direct investment, expand advanced manufacturing and technology projects, and reinforce its position within North American supply chains. The strategy builds on strong 1Q26 FDI growth led by manufacturing and targets additional investments across automotive, semiconductors, IT, logistics and energy, highlighting how international partnerships, investor confidence and state competitiveness are shaping regional industrial development in Mexico.

Aguascalientes is strengthening its international investment strategy by deepening economic ties with Canada and Japan as the state seeks to sustain strong foreign direct investment (FDI) momentum and attract a new wave of manufacturing and technology projects. State officials recently participated in diplomatic meetings with representatives from both countries, underscoring Aguascalientes' commitment to expanding international partnerships that support investment, innovation, and industrial development.

The outreach comes as the state aims to build on a record of 78 investment announcements and US$342.1 million in FDI during 1Q2026, while targeting an additional 30 investment projects worth more than US$600 million this year, reported MBN.

The initiatives reflect the state's broader strategy of strengthening relationships with long-standing trade and investment partners while positioning Aguascalientes as one of Mexico's most competitive destinations for advanced manufacturing and high-value industries.

Although the meetings involved different international partners, both centered on expanding collaboration that supports economic growth and reinforces investor confidence in the state's business environment.

Canada Partnership Reinforces Investment Strategy

As part of its international agenda, Aguascalientes participated in the Canada Day reception organized by the Canadian Consulate in Guadalajara, where state officials met with Canadian diplomatic representatives to discuss opportunities for closer economic cooperation.

Representing the state government, Minister of Economic Development, Science and Technology Esaú Garza de Vega met with Canadian Ambassador to Mexico Cameron MacKay and Canadian Consul in Guadalajara Sébastien Moffett. Garza thanked both officials for the invitation and reaffirmed the state's commitment to strengthening institutional relationships that can facilitate new investment projects and productive development.

"Canada is a strategic partner for Aguascalientes and one of our principal trading partners. Meetings like these allow us to expand economic cooperation and create new opportunities for the state's productive sector," Garza said. The minister said the state government remains committed to implementing policies that strengthen competitiveness, promote innovation and create favorable conditions for new investment projects that generate economic opportunities for local businesses and families.

Officials said participation in diplomatic events forms part of a broader strategy to increase Aguascalientes' international presence and maintain close relationships with countries that have established investments in strategic industries such as manufacturing, automotive production and technology.

The state also seeks to expand collaboration with Canadian companies and institutions while reinforcing investor confidence and maintaining Aguascalientes' position as one of Mexico's leading destinations for productive investment. The engagement with Canada complements the state's broader international investment strategy, which also includes strengthening relationships with other major foreign investors operating in Mexico.

Japan Deepens Long-Term Economic Cooperation

Alongside its outreach to Canada, Aguascalientes is also reinforcing its long-standing economic relationship with Japan, one of the state's largest foreign investors and a key contributor to its industrial development.

Garza held a working meeting with Takero Aoyama, Consul General of Japan in Leon, to discuss opportunities to expand bilateral cooperation and attract additional investment projects. According to state officials, the discussions reaffirmed Japan's confidence in Aguascalientes and highlighted the country's continued importance within the state's industrial development strategy.

"Japan is a strategic partner for Aguascalientes. The confidence demonstrated by Japanese companies has played a fundamental role in strengthening economic activities that generate value and competitiveness," Garza said.

The meeting focused on promoting investment, technological development, innovation and the creation of high-quality employment, priorities that align with the state's long-term economic growth strategy.

Japanese companies have maintained a significant presence in Aguascalientes for decades, particularly within the automotive manufacturing industry and its supplier network. Their investments have helped establish the state as one of Mexico's leading automotive and advanced manufacturing hubs while supporting the development of specialized industrial capabilities. The renewed engagement reflects the state's efforts to capitalize on existing international partnerships while encouraging further expansion by companies already operating in the region.

Manufacturing Continues to Lead Investment Growth

The diplomatic outreach with Canada and Japan coincides with strong investment performance that continues to reinforce Aguascalientes' position within regional and global manufacturing supply chains. According to the Ministry of Economic Development, Science and Technology (SEDECYT), the state attracted US$342.1 million in FDI during 1Q26, representing a 211.4% increase compared with the same period last year.

Manufacturing remained the primary investment driver, accounting for US$271.8 million, or nearly 80% of total FDI received during the quarter. The sector recorded a 127% year-over-year increase, reflecting continued expansion by global manufacturers and sustained demand for North American production capabilities. State officials attribute the investment growth to a combination of legal certainty, public security, competitive infrastructure, industrial innovation and a specialized workforce, factors they say continue to attract both domestic and international companies.

Since the beginning of the current administration, Aguascalientes has announced 78 investment projects spanning strategic industries including automotive manufacturing, information technology, semiconductors, electronics, energy, metalworking, food production, logistics, industrial parks and real estate development.

Looking ahead, the state expects to secure an additional 30 investment projects worth more than US$600 million during 2026, creating approximately 8,000 formal jobs. Officials believe continued engagement with key international partners such as Canada and Japan will support those objectives while strengthening Aguascalientes' role as a competitive destination for advanced manufacturing, technology investment and industrial innovation in Mexico.
