Logistics and retail giants Amazon, Mercado Libre, and Geodis will invest more than MX$21 billion (about US$1.2 billion) in the State of Mexico to expand logistics infrastructure, open new centers and create thousands of jobs, state officials announced this week. The projects will include new facilities in Lerma, Tultepec, and Tultitlan, strengthening the state’s role as a logistics hub and boosting competitiveness in e-commerce and supply chain operations.

Laura González, State Minister of Economic Development, said State of Mexico leads the country with 389 distribution centers, representing 13% of the national total. The logistics sector accounts for 7.5% of the state’s GDP and has attracted US$730 million in foreign investment and more than MX$36 billion in domestic investment during the current administration, she added.

Amazon’s Expansion and Disaster Hub
Diana Francés, Amazon Mexico’s Director of Operations, announced the launch of Latin America’s first disaster response hub in the state. The facility is equipped with 25,000 essential goods for rapid deployment in emergencies.

Amazon will also open a new logistics center in Lerma this year, adding hundreds of jobs to its existing network of five shipping centers, one sorting facility and two delivery stations in the state. The company also supports more than 4,000 small businesses and entrepreneurs in State of Mexico, some of which export their products internationally.

Mercado Libre: Largest Employer in Logistics
Agustín Pablo Acosta, Mercado Libre’s Executive Vice President of Global Logistics, said the company currently operates 15 logistics facilities in State of Mexico, dispatching more than 427,000 packages daily. Around 79,000 deliveries go directly to state households each day.

Mercado Libre employs 12,500 people in the state and plans to add more than 9,000 jobs, 5,000 direct and 4,000 indirect, by the end of 2025, reaching a workforce of 17,500. As part of its expansion plans, the company is planning to build Latin America’s largest cross-dock logistics center in Tultitlán and Tultepec.

Geodis Strengthens Presence in Tultepec
French logistics firm Geodis also announced a new facility in Tultepec, which will add 146 jobs to its existing 2,500 employees in the state, said Víctor Benavides, Vice President of Sales in Mexico. The company recently opened additional facilities that created 155 jobs and reaffirmed its commitment to Mexico as a strategic base.

Government Support for Growth
Mexico State’s Secretary General, Horacio Duarte, said the investments reinforce a “virtuous circle” where private capital drives employment, social mobility, and poverty reduction. The state has generated more than 130,000 new jobs during the current administration, helping 1.9 million residents rise out of poverty.

Currently, more than 660,000 people work in logistics in Mexico State, which ranks third nationwide in logistics activity with nearly 3,000 companies operating in the sector.

“Each new project in Mexico State means decent jobs, training, social mobility and well-being for families,” Duarte said. “Our commitment is to consolidate the state as a model of sustainable, inclusive, and human development.”
