AutoZone Invests US$183 Million in Guanajuato Distribution Center
Summary: AutoZone is investing US$183 million in a 194,832m² distribution center in Leon, Guanajuato, expected to create approximately 600 jobs and strengthen its logistics network across Mexico’s Bajío and western regions. Located at Plataforma Industrial Leon-Bajio, the project reinforces Guanajuato’s industrial investment strategy, Guanajuato SUMA, which targets US$8 billion in investment by 2030 through logistics infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, technology, and supplier development. The expansion highlights the role of industrial connectivity, energy availability, workforce development, and regional market access in attracting investment to Mexico.
AutoZone is investing US$183 million in a new distribution center in Leon, Guanajuato, expanding its logistics capacity in Mexico as the state seeks to attract investment in advanced manufacturing, technology and infrastructure. The project, which is expected to generate approximately 600 jobs, will strengthen the company's supply network across the Bajío and western Mexico while adding to Guanajuato's growing portfolio of industrial investments.
The company broke ground on the facility Sept. 28 at Plataforma Industrial Leon-Bajio (PILBA). The complex will occupy 194,832m2 and expand AutoZone's distribution capabilities in a region connected to major manufacturing centers, transportation corridors and consumer markets.
The investment also builds on AutoZone's established presence in Guanajuato, where it entered the market in July 2005 and currently operates 55 stores. The company employs approximately 500 people in the state, meaning the new distribution center could more than double its local workforce.
AutoZone Expands Its Logistics Footprint in Mexico
The Leon project represents another stage in AutoZone's expansion in Mexico, where the company operates more than 900 stores and employs approximately 12,000 people nationwide.
The retailer selected Leon in December 2022 for the opening of its 7,000th store worldwide, underscoring the city's role in its broader operations. The new distribution center will support the company's ability to supply stores and customers across the Bajio and western regions.
Domingo Hurtado, Senior Vice President of international Operations at AutoZone, emphasized the importance of the local business environment in determining investment destinations.
“The importance that is finding the right environment to decide where to invest, and here we have found it,” Hurtado said, adding that AutoZone operates stores in every state in Mexico.
The project comes as companies increasingly consider logistics infrastructure, industrial connectivity and access to regional markets when evaluating expansion opportunities. For AutoZone, Leon offers a location from which to strengthen distribution operations while supporting its existing retail network.
PILBA Offers Infrastructure and Regional Connectivity
The distribution center will be located within PILBA, an industrial development that also hosts operations by companies such as Amazon and Mercado Libre.
The platform provides infrastructure designed to support industrial and logistics activities, including its own electrical substation, natural gas supply, wastewater treatment plant, fiber-optic connectivity and multimodal access.
Its location provides connections to Federal Highway 45, Guanajuato International Airport and the Bajio's principal industrial corridors. Leon is also approximately two hours from Aguascalientes, Guadalajara, Queretaro and San Luis Potosi, providing access to several important economic centers.
These conditions are relevant to distribution operations that depend on transportation efficiency, infrastructure availability and proximity to commercial markets.
For Guanajuato, the investment adds to a broader effort to consolidate its industrial base while attracting projects in technology-intensive activities and logistics.
Guanajuato SUMA Targets US$8 Billion in Investment
AutoZone's announcement coincides with the launch of Guanajuato SUMA, an economic development strategy intended to attract investment, strengthen local capabilities and expand industrial activity beyond the state's traditional manufacturing corridors.
The state recently announced 17 additional investment projects expected to generate more than 3,500 jobs. The projects involve companies from the United States, Brazil, Britain, France, Canada, Taiwan and China, with activities spanning data centers, renewable energy, automotive manufacturing, food, services and industrial developments, reported MBN.
The investments will be distributed across municipalities including San Miguel de Allende, Juventino Rosas and Guanajuato capital.
Gov. Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo said the projects bring Guanajuato's total to 76 committed investments and 18,811 expected jobs, equivalent to 80% of the administration's six-year investment target.
Guanajuato SUMA establishes a US$8 billion investment goal through 2030, with 60% expected from new projects and 40% from reinvestments by companies already operating in the state.
Its priority sectors include semiconductors, artificial intelligence, data centers, electromobility, advanced manufacturing, medical devices, aerospace and clean energy.
Industrial Development Extends Beyond Major Corridors
The strategy also seeks to distribute investment more broadly across Guanajuato's 46 municipalities. The state aims to locate at least 15% of new investment outside its traditional industrial corridor and provide sufficient, reliable energy to 100% of strategic industrial parks by 2030.
Workforce development and supplier integration are additional components. The plan includes more than 3,000 subsidized microcredentials, support for 14,000 micro, small and medium-sized enterprises through Marca Guanajuato, and certification for 7,000 suppliers.
Cristina Villaseñor, Guanajuato's minister of economic development, said the strategy recognizes the different economic capabilities of municipalities, including agriculture, manufacturing, commerce, tourism, services and crafts.
She also highlighted the participation of companies, universities, workers, merchants, producers and entrepreneurs in connecting established economic activities with knowledge, specialization and innovation.
Within this framework, AutoZone's investment illustrates how logistics infrastructure can complement manufacturing and commercial activity while supporting regional distribution networks.
Leon Strengthens Its Position as a Logistics Hub
Municipal and state authorities have positioned the distribution center as part of Leon's continuing economic development.
Leon Mayor Ale Gutiérrez said the project reflects companies' confidence in the city and highlighted the municipal government's role in facilitating investment. García Muñoz Ledo pointed to the combination of infrastructure, technology, talent and strategic location supporting Guanajuato's logistics development.
