Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit Mexico next week for talks with President Claudia Sheinbaum focused on trade and investment. “We both have significant trade with the United States, but there is also strong Mexico-Canada trade under USMCA,” Sheinbaum said.
She confirmed she will receive Carney at the National Palace on Sept. 17, after which leaders will hold a joint press briefing. The Canadian Prime Minister will continue with additional meetings in Mexico City on Sept. 18 before his departure.
The two leaders are also expected to discuss Canadian investments in Mexico in sectors such as mining, natural gas, and railways, Sheinbaum noted.
Earlier, on Aug. 5, Sheinbaum met with Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne and Foreign Minister Anita Anand in Mexico City to prepare for Carney’s visit. After that meeting, Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico’s interest in expanding trade and Canadian investment amid Trump’s push for new tariffs.
Trump has justified tariff measures against both Mexico and Canada by claiming they are not doing enough to curb undocumented migration and fentanyl trafficking.
