Summary: Austria-based HENN Connector Group expanded its Mexico footprint with a US$4 million manufacturing plant in Silao through HENN Americas, reinforcing Guanajuato’s automotive and advanced manufacturing supply chain amid accelerating nearshoring. The investment supports regional integration by localizing high-performance connector production for internal combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles, improving logistics efficiency and responsiveness across North America. The move underscores Mexico’s role as a strategic manufacturing platform while deepening bilateral industrial ties between Austria and Mexico, benefiting OEMs, Tier-1 suppliers, and skilled labor markets.
Austria-based industrial technology company HENN Connector Group, through its subsidiary HENN Americas, inaugurated a new manufacturing plant in Silao with an investment of US$4 million and the creation of up to 100 direct jobs, strengthening the regional automotive and auto parts supply chain.
The new facility reinforces Guanajuato’s position as a key manufacturing hub in Mexico and reflects growing foreign investment tied to advanced manufacturing, nearshoring and regional supply chain integration. The plant, located at Hybrid Park Silao across from the FIPASI Industrial Park, spans approximately 4,800 square meters, according to data from Cluster Industrial B2B Intelligence.
State officials said the project underscores Guanajuato’s ability to attract high-value manufacturing operations supported by skilled labor, logistics infrastructure and a strong automotive ecosystem. Cristina Villaseñor, Minister of Economy, Guanajuato, said the investment enhances advanced manufacturing in the state and consolidates its status as one of Mexico’s leading industrial nodes.
“This new plant boosts advanced manufacturing and reaffirms the confidence international companies place in Guanajuato’s talent, infrastructure and competitiveness,” Villaseñor said. “With HENN, economic ties between Mexico and Austria are also strengthened through technology, innovation and growth.”
North American Expansion Strategy
Beyond its local impact, the Silao operation is part of HENN’s broader strategy to bring production closer to customers in North America and Latin America, reducing logistics times and improving regional responsiveness.
In June 2025, José Cortez, Vice President, HENN Americas Operations, announced the company’s arrival in Guanajuato through LinkedIn, highlighting Silao as a strategic location for delivering engineering excellence directly to the region. HIS HENN Silao will serve automotive applications, fluid transfer systems and customized engineering solutions under global performance and precision standards.
High-Performance Connector Technology
At the core of HENN’s expansion is its specialization in high-performance coupling and connector systems for air, fluids and gases, used across automotive, aerospace and potable water applications. The company’s portfolio includes HENNconnectors, focused on innovative intelligent couplings made from metal and plastic materials, and HENNgineered, which delivers end-to-end solutions from conceptual development and prototyping to small- and large-scale serial production.
The Silao plant will function not only as a production site but also as a center for technological innovation, aligned with the evolving needs of modern automotive manufacturing, including internal combustion, hybrid and electric vehicle systems.
HENN’s arrival adds to Guanajuato’s long-established automotive ecosystem, supported by robust supplier networks, strategic logistics corridors and specialized human capital. The investment comes amid accelerating trends in nearshoring and supply chain regionalization, which have become decisive factors for competitiveness across North America’s automotive sector.
With the new facility, HENN Americas expands its continental footprint while reinforcing Silao’s role as a strategic hub for advanced industrial connectivity solutions.
Mexico–Austria Economic Ties Deepen
The project also reflects more than 180 years of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Austria, which have evolved into a dynamic partnership driven by trade, technology and industrial collaboration. While bilateral trade remains asymmetrical, Austrian companies continue to expand their presence in Mexico, particularly in manufacturing and industrial technologies. Guanajuato, along with Coahuila and Queretaro, has emerged as one of the main recipients of Austrian foreign direct investment in recent years, reported MBN.
Austria’s technological footprint in Mexico includes major infrastructure and manufacturing projects led by companies such as Doppelmayr in urban mobility and ENGEL, which recently announced a major expansion in Queretaro.
Together, these investments underscore Austria’s growing role in Mexico’s industrial modernization and the continued integration of global technology into the country’s manufacturing base.
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from Austria reached US$30.9 million in 2024, mostly in inter‑company loans (US$29.7 million). Cumulatively, from 1999 to 2024, Mexico has received US$1.13 billion in Austrian investment, with Coahuila, State of Mexico, and Queretaro as the main beneficiaries, reported MBN. But for 2024 alone, the states that received the highest FDI from Austria were Coahuila, Queretaro, and Guanajuato.
To date, 233 Austrian companies operate in Mexico, concentrated in the State of Mexico, Coahuila, Mexico City, and Queretaro, with a focus on manufacturing, automotive, and industrial technologies, states the Mexican Senate.
Austrian Innovation in Mexico: Doppelmayr and ENGEL Lead the Way
Austria’s economic footprint in Mexico is not only measured in trade but also in technological contributions. For example, global leader in ropeway and cable car systems Doppelmayr has transformed urban mobility and tourism infrastructure in Mexico with projects such as:
-
Cablebús Line 1 (Mexico City, 2021): 9.2 km, serving 50,000 passengers daily
-
Cablebús Line 3 (Mexico City, 2024): 5.4 km, designed for 36 million passengers annually
-
Aerotrén (Mexico City Airport, 2007): Connecting Terminals 1 and 2
-
And a cablecar in Uruapan, Michoacan, which is still in the works
Another major Austrian player, ENGEL, announced in March the expansion of its injection molding and automation operations in Queretaro, investing MX$1.1 billion (US$54.26 million) to create 515 new jobs.
