Kyungshin to Produce EV Battery Modules With US$50M Investment
Auto parts manufacturer Kyungshin Cable de México inaugurated a US$50 million expansion of its facility in Gómez Palacio, Durango strengthening the region’s role in the electric mobility industry. The new facility, named Kyungshin Cable Gómez Palacio II, plans to manufacture battery module assemblies (BMAs) for Ford’s electric vehicles and is expected to generate 1,000 new jobs: 60% technical positions and 40% operational roles.
“This is not just an expansion; it is a clear sign that Durango has a future in the technology industry,” said Durango Governor Esteban Villegas during the inauguration ceremony.
The company has already invested 56% of the total amount, which includes the installation of 27 advanced manufacturing machines valued at over MX$160 million (US$9.6 million), as well as a new clean room for high-precision processes. Production trials are scheduled for 2025 ahead of full-scale manufacturing.
Kyungshin’s move solidifies its ambition to become Durango’s most vertically and horizontally integrated auto parts supplier. The company already produces wiring, harnesses, electronic boards, and strategic EV components. Kia Motors serves as Kyungshin’s primary customer, reinforcing the company’s strong ties to the automotive industry.
Durango City Mayor Leticia Herrera Ale highlighted the city’s growing industrial competitiveness amid global nearshoring trends, noting that projects like Kyungshin’s expansion are creating new opportunities for local families.
The expansion reflects Mexico’s increasing role as a hub for Asian manufacturers relocating operations, driven by the country’s logistical connectivity, technical talent, and coordinated support across government levels.
Kyungshin has operated in Durango since 2011 and now positions Gómez Palacio as a strategic platform for advanced manufacturing and electric vehicle innovation in North America.
