Puebla Seeks to Be Cultural, Tourist Host City for the World Cup
In an effort to boost international tourism and the local economy, the Puebla City Council has approved a proposal by Councilor Manuel Durán for the city to serve as a cultural and tourist host during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Led by Mayor José Chedraui, the City Council endorsed the initiative during a regular session, supporting Durán’s vision to align Puebla with the global exposure generated by the World Cup, which will be held across Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
Although Puebla is not slated to host official matches, Durán emphasized that the city has the necessary infrastructure, connectivity, and hospitality to welcome sports delegations, media, and fans from around the world. “We want Puebla to once again be part of world football history and to show the planet its culture, hospitality, and greatness,” Durán said.
The approved measure does not involve public spending but promotes coordination between the Municipal Ministry of Economy and Tourism and the Municipal Sports Institute, in collaboration with the state government and the federal administration. Together, they aim to position Puebla as a hub for events and services linked to the 2026 World Cup.
Durán underscored that the tournament presents a unique opportunity to strengthen the local economy, energize tourism, and elevate the city’s global profile.
“The 2026 World Cup will be more than just football; it will be a showcase to promote our gastronomy, culture, and traditions. Puebla can and should host this global celebration,” he added.
Through this initiative, the Puebla City Council reaffirms its commitment to economic, sports, and tourism development, in line with Governor Alejandro Armenta’s efforts to establish Puebla as a key player in international events.
