Governor of Sonora Alfonso Durazo stresses his commitment to fully supporting the mining sector in response to growing concerns that the tariffs on products exported to the United States could lead to reduced investments. The tariffs are set to take effect in April.
"I hope this issue is resolved positively, and that the decision made by the US government and President Trump is upheld in a month, allowing trade between our countries to return to normal," says Durazo.
Sonora is home to about 280 extractive projects focused on materials such as gold and copper, with an economic impact exceeding MX$72 billion (US$3.58 billion), alongside other elements in the supply chain. Mining accounts for 20% of the state’s GDP and provides over 20,000 direct jobs and 120,000 indirect jobs, making Sonora the country's leading producer in the sector.
US Tariffs on Mexican Products
Last week, President Claudia Sheinbaum held direct negotiations with US President Donald Trump to address the tariffs imposed by the United States. Mexico’s Minister of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, says that Mexican exports compliant with USMCA regulations would not be subject to tariffs until at least April 2. While most of Mexico’s trade with the US falls under the USMCA framework, a significant portion of companies previously operating under the "Most Favored Nation" (MFN) status may now opt for the USMCA rules to avoid tariffs. Ebrard estimates that 85%-90% of Mexico’s exports to the United States would now be covered under the agreement.
As April approaches, further decisions regarding US trade policies are expected. The Mexican government is actively engaging with businesses that may face challenges in meeting USMCA standards, particularly in the automotive and related industries. Discussions with the US Trade Representative (USTR) are scheduled for the coming weeks to clarify the way forward, according to Ebrard.
